Alright back on subject. I personally prefer braid over mono as my main line as Im typically able to save my weight, swivel, and bead after a snag. The leader breaks before braid 95% of the time. Downside Ive found with braid is it can be a little "noisy" , almost like a whistling noise as you troll through the water. Not sure if fish hear it or even care but it can get annoying if you like to drift quietly. The other issue Ive encountered is with planer boards. You typically need a stronger clip with braid as standard strength almost always slip off if pulling with any kind of speed. I get big rolls of braid off of Amazon.

Piper, things happen for a reason. Maybe a bigger boat, better job and new love will be in your future. Glad you are back.

I want to say thanks for all the response I have gotten to my questions as I try get setup for stripers. so I got the 4 Shakespeare Striper rods set up with ABU Striper Specials with 17 lb blue smoke. I also have the four Rock Creek Planer boards. I've acquired a variety of top water plugs based on what I have read on this website along with flukes and bucktails. So I think in the equipment/artificial lure section I am good to go. I am 1st on the list for a 20 gallon SBTII when they come in from Extreme Fishing Concepts. I noticed that some of the guys on this forum talk as though they don't really fish for stripers much or at all in the summer time. I know boat traffic is an issue but for me that is when I do almost all of my fishing. So is live bait fishing more of a fall and winter tactic or do people live bait fish in the summer as well? I guess I'm just wondering if I'm not doing any winter fishing if the purchase of the tank is warranted.

I don't fish summers because catch and release doesn't work. It is simply not worth the effort and cost to drive almost 2 hours, catch bait, catch 4 fish (with a partner) then drive home. Sometimes we would have our limit and be headed home at 10.

Get the biggest tank your boat will handle. I don't bait fish in the summer because I harvest my limit and quit fishing. Fall and Spring is live bait time.

Yes, I have gathered from what I have read here on the forum that release survival rates plummet in summer. Like most I hate see a fish I released go belly up. The other thing about it is I like my catfish and crappie jigging too so I dont see myself giving that up. So when you say you don't bait fish in the summer am I correct in assuming that you will striper fish in the summer but you use artificial baits during those times?

jsn, like most folks on here I fish year round. Summertime is the time to take friends and family out fishing. Weather is great and ales are easy. You just have to do it responsibly..... I don't target fish deeper than 30 ft. deep for catch and release..... when they do move deeper, limit and done.... john, maybe you should ask 2 more friends to go out with you in the summer months.... would an 8 fish limit persuade to go?

Bait, jigging and urigs are effective in the summer. Bait is probably the most effective day to day.
Without getting too deep, my opinion is it's not the legal catch n keepers that are hurting our fishery in the summer, but the legal catch n releasers, and those people can be one in the same. I'm as guilty as anybody - most all of us are to be honest. I limit my fishing in the summer to a handful of times - just enough to stay sane. If there's anyone that can claim there's as many fish today as there was 5-6yrs ago, then I want to go fishing with you. It's not even close numbers wise - that's on us.

Dangit BentRod!!!!, I thought that was the biggest argument for the slot change...... remove the smaller fish so the bigger fish would take their place...... here I've been vacuuming the lake of sub 30" fish, so You, mward and yam can catch a 30lber for nothing? .......I agree, there aren't as many fish as there were 5-6 years ago.... and I knew this was going to happen.

It's two completely different issues, although it would make sense they're related in some way if you reduce numbers overall and maintain forage levels.
To be clear, there haven't been near as many fish WAAAAY before the slot change. Our fish numbers went to pot around 2013. And honestly we had about 8-10yrs there where pressure was minimal, so maybe this is now the norm - I don't honestly know what the deal is - I just know we used to hit maaassssive schools on the regular all over the lake and when I hit just an average school these days I'm giggling like a school girl. Either way, tons or none, they're still stunted.

Could the smaller schools be due to the fish being stocked at so many different locations on the lake they are now spread out more?
