As alot of you know the boat i purchased found out to be to good to be true. Needs a power head. I wont get into details but need some advice. My question is that it has a 200hp efi mercury on it now. Would i be hurting myself by looking at 150,175,225hp or should i only stay with a 200hp. Power head is goin to be aroumd 4k and ive found engines from 150-225hp rebuilt with 1 year warranty for 5k-6k. I dont mind the thought of a 150hp but dont wanna be disappointed. Boat is 22 foot bay center console. Thanks in advance for any and all input.

What does the transom tag call for? Sorry about the mess with the powerhead. I just went through it. The Seapro I just got is a heavy beast. 21.5' and has the 150 on it and it was plenty.
Be careful about rebuilt motors vs. remanufactured. Rebuilt uses all used good internals, where a reman uses new pistons, rings, all bearings, wrist pins etc. So, there is a difference there.
5-6K is not bad for a rebuilt with 1 yr. warranty. Would you install the powerhead yourself if you bought one, or have a shop do it? If you had a shop do it, it would probably be in the 5-6k range and you would have a reman powerhead instead of rebuilt. Just food for thought.

If it's just the powerhead, then I would replace just the powerhead. Do as Pete says and be sure to get a factory re-manufactured unit. Of course, you don't know if your gearbox and electronics are on the verge of going too, so that is something you really need to think about.
I know it's fishing season, but you can get a great used engine these days, especially with the number of big hp boats going to the new Evinrude G2, which should increase the number of engines on market. It might take a lot of looking though.
New outboards are big money. Especially with that horsepower.
Can you rebuild your powerhead? Or is it toast?

I would install it myself to save the money. The tag only says hp v6 so that a wide spread lol. Reason for woundering is i can find 225 and 150hp alot more around then 200hp.

John, the power had already been rebuilt before so i really dont wanna rebuild it id rather buy a power head. But a full engine swap keeps being on my mind

So I looked it up. Looks like there is a 21' bay and a 22' DLX. Doesnt give HP unfortunately. But, all I can see on the net is 200hp and up for that boat. Id be afraid that anything smaller wouldn't cut it. www.nadaguides.com/Boats/1998/Champion-Boats

Interest rates on a new motor are pretty good - in some cases I've seen no interest for 60months. A 200 Suzuki 4 stroke is like $11-12k with a 5-6yr warranty. If you can get no interest financing, I'd be more tempted to go that route than dump 5-6k into something used or rebuilt.

Mike told me about them the other day id love to go that route my only problem being is id hate to have 2 boat payments lol but boy does a new motor sound good

Feed your mind brother, make a good decision!! So the big thing to consider with these engines is the displacement, rather than the HP. This is what is going to get the boat on plane and give it the getup and go when it needs it. HP is just a number........... But it will add some top end. That being said, the 150 and 200HP block of the Merc 2 strokes that I could find were the same displacement, 153 CU IN. Stepping up to the 225-250 is still a V6 at 185 CU IN. The 150 EFI in 1998 weighed 415lbs. The 175 EFI weighed 415. The 200 EFI weighed 415. The 225 EFI weighed 460. Power to weight ratio of the 200 is KILLING IT!!!! Be aware, that older boats were NOT designed for the added weight of the 4 stroke engines. It could really change the way the boat feels and sets in the water. Add that and less low end torque of the 4 strokes, and we have a decrease in power-weight ratio. Before 2006, most boats were designed for the power/weight ratio of a 2 stroke engine. Keep this in mind. A 2015 4 stroke Suzuki The 150HP weighs an enormous 485 lbs. The 200HP clocks in at 503. The 225HP at 580 The 250HP at 580 as well. You got an old wooden transom that all this weight is going to hang off the back of?
