This site has measurements real-time at two locations, 3-feet under he surface. Shows it still at 52-54 at that depth. Surprising how long it takes the warmth to sink down a few feet when the sun is warming the top layer. smlfishfinder.com

I cuaght a female on a bed saturday that weighed 3.7 and she pulled the stringer out my hand and got off with another little bass. I was fishing in a pond so I knew she would not go far. Well she didn't, sunday I found her sitting about 30 yards down the bank. Threw a senko down there and she hammered it. She had the scar from the hook in her mouth from saturday and I knew she was the same bass. She had actually layed her eggs since saturday so she only weighed 3.4 but i didn't care. "she tasted just the same". Cooked her for dinner and ate her.
(i love to eat bass more than any other fish)!!!!

Pond fish usually go on beds before lake fish, the water warms up much faster. I would think we'll see bass on beds on some parts of smith in the next couple weeks. but not good to take the females out before they lay their eggs

She had already layed her eggs we checked when we cleaned her I would take a video on how to fillet a spawning female and share it with the other SML bass fisherman. I'm sure that they will give you some excellent tips on where and how to catch some more.

She was on bed the day before and weighed 3.7 and she got away and i went back the next day caught one that weighed 3.4 and had a hook mark in the same lip area as the one the day before and had a scar that looked like one on the bass from the previous day so i was just assuming

did you also assume that when you kept her that her eggs she did lay probably wont make it now with just the male watching them, who may even abandon the bed now? theres so many lake fish, it wouldnt hurt so much, but ponds are smaller and i would've thrown her back and given her eggs a better chance to hatch with her protecting the bed from raiding bluegills and other predators...

This is what I always shake my head about when they have bass tournies when the bass are on the beds and then catch those fish and haul them away from their beds. Seems like it can't help - maybe on the scale of the lake our size it does not hurt, but what is it teaching other anglers - young and old - regarding responsible practices....... when they see this and go back to their home waters where ever they maybe - that may be smaller and have more of an impact.
I was wondering- did the Bass Pro Big Bass tourney move to 4/22 from 4/9 to move out of the spawn, or to make sure they were more likely to be in the spawn to have more big fish weighed in???
And for all - threads like this hopefully educate the original poster but others as well. Be kind in your comments to the above post but also be factual and help educate.

Nah - you're right on. Just trying to protect the kid from a pile on, but education needs to happen - that's what these forums are for.

I actually wondered this myself. It's been that same weekend in April for the last few years so I found it odd they moved it up 2 weeks. Part of me thinks it was just logistics/scheduling and not because of the spawn, but either way I think it will definitely be beneficial to the spawn as the majority of fish won't be on beds by then (hopefully). The last thing the fishery needs is 500+ boats bed fishing for 2 days straight
