This is what I always shake my head about when they have bass tournies when the bass are on the beds and then catch those fish and haul them away from their beds. Seems like it can't help - maybe on the scale of the lake our size it does not hurt, but what is it teaching other anglers - young and old - regarding responsible practices....... when they see this and go back to their home waters where ever they maybe - that may be smaller and have more of an impact. I was wondering- did the Bass Pro Big Bass tourney move to 4/22 from 4/9 to move out of the spawn, or to make sure they were more likely to be in the spawn to have more big fish weighed in??? And for all - threads like this hopefully educate the original poster but others as well. Be kind in your comments to the above post but also be factual and help educate. I hope I wasn't too brash in my comments either, my intentions weren't to pile on, but to educate the kid. I'm pretty sure by the PM he sent me that he took it the wrong way. I just think its prudent to teach kids at a young age that fishing isn't just about catching, that there is also a certain amount of etiquette involved, as well as the aspect of conservation/preservation of the resource. That learning those things will be beneficial to ones current fishing, future fishing, and future generations fishing, like perhaps ones own kids and grandkids down the road...maybe my prior comment didn't portray that in the best way...I have no problem with someone keeping fish at all as long as its in a legal manner, but to me there is also other things to consider than just what the regulations say is allowed. I don't eat fish myself, but if i did, i still would throw a spawning bass back. there are times to keep fish and times to throw them back in my opinion.

Amen Redbear - you hit the nail on the head. It is up to us to educate the next generation to ensure the fisheries are around for the one after. As anglers we need to respect all fisheries - not just "our" prefered ones.

Tblspoon was apologizing to me (and you perhaps) for his post that was a bit sarcastic to which that and another I responded to asking folks to be fair and level headed. That goes both ways.....

Too much lippin not enough whippin i dont think this new aged take a "timeout" stuff sits with kids quite the same or creates the same effect as getting your butt whipped with a belt or switch. especially if you had to go cut the switch yourself, and if you didnt cut a good one you had to go cut another and got whipped that much more...

Just an observation, but the direction this thread took from its title is kinda interesting. I would've never guessed a discussion like this would go this way. Again, just an observation.
Provocation with the intent to provoke is mischief. Provocation with the intent to inspire thought is teaching. People who frequent this site (and others like it) are, for the most part, conservation-minded. They like to see and hear or read about people doing stuff to protect this amazing resource (gift). It should be expected that they'd get a little riled up when someone says something perceived to be contrary to their conservation-mindedness. Back to the two types of provocation - one absolutely has a place here, one does not.
Respect matters. Beware ready-fire-aim.

There is nothing wrong with eating what you catch as long as it is withing the law. I carried home many nice fish to show my friends and family. All of them were eaten. Now, my remarks about taking a video. I was trying to let you know that some people are dead set on release. If you want ANY useful information on where to catch fish and what bait to use, don't let them know that you are going to eat them. Unless they're crappie or white perch. Now, for your Birthday on 7/3, ask for a cast net and practice in your yard. You will then be one step closer to an expert bait fisherman.
