I expect our founders probably used black powder to hunt. You shouldn't need a large magazine to hunt. Practice on your aim. Or better yet, slow that bullet down to 55mph, mount headlights & a horn on it & the deer will jump out in front of it. As far as laws not being effective, there are deaths every day from drunk drivers even though there are laws against it. I wonder how many deaths there would be without those laws? To answer the original question, If you want your 270 or what ever to look like a AK47, you are either preparing for war,(large capacity magazine),You like the looks of the gun, or you're up to no good. I own several hunting guns even though I don't hunt. None of which will hold more than 10 rounds.

Hi Asleepafloat, good to have you posting again.
My son just bought an "AK 47." He likes collecting interesting military guns and he has a few. Before he moved to Alabama, every time he would get one, we would go out in the backyard and shoot it. They are really fun to shoot. There are such large differences between the various types of military guns that it really is enjoyable to try to figure out what the gun manufacturer was tying to accomplish.
My current favorite military gun is the Swiss Army bolt action rifle. Talk about accurate, it is amazing!!! It has this really weird bolt. On a normal bolt action rifle you lift up on the handle and then pull the bolt back. Not on the Swiss military rifle. All you do is pull the bolt back and it automatically rotates the bolt for you.
Right now I use a 03-A3 US military rifle as my deer rifle (this thing is accurate out to many hundreds of yards).. It is an amazing gun. But between now and next deer season I am going to make the Swiss Army rifle into my deer gun by mounting a scope and maybe changing the stock. I can't wait to see how it works out in the field.
This is fun stuff. I guess if you grew up with hunting and target shooting you never really think of a gun as a weapon to hurt someone. I hope this helps you understand why a person would have an "AK 47." By the way I have not shot his new "AK 47" yet. Last year when I went down to see my son the range was closed. But I can't wait to get down there again and try it out.

I don't recall "name calling" anyone. My point was and is and will always be that I can own that gun because I CHOOSE to do so. I don't need to explain my reasoning to anyone. The FOUNDERS meant for this to be a FREE country, free of the government intervention that they left behind. It has nothing to do whatsoever with the type of weapon you choose to buy, or the type of toothbrush that you use. The entire purpose of this nation was to be a FREE people. I don't want anyone telling me I can't go to a 7/11 and purchase a Big Gulp like they now do in NY City! The government has no right to tell you what type of lightbulbs you can burn in your house etc etc. I don't tell anyone the way they should live their lives (except perhaps my kids on occasion) and I certainly don't want any politician deciding those things for me.

Our founders version of a FREE country made it legal to own slaves, but the slaves weren't free. They didn't let women vote,so women weren't free. Sometimes laws need to be adjusted. 26 children & adults lost their chance to enjoy freedom. No, don't ban guns. But come up with some comprehensive laws that will keep them away from psycos so we can continue to own them.

"The ammunition has enough knockdown power to killed deer, bears and large wild boar and has become a popular hunting weapons" That answers one question right from the link posted. Well if I had just read the whole article instead of skimming the first half, I could have avoided this entire post. I appreciate the replies though. It has me wondering about gun safes now, and hidden keys. And I like lund1's challenge.

I've been sitting here trying to figure out how to word my thoughts without offending anyone as this is a touchy and passionate subject. I will first say that I agree mostly with Bigjon, Bigun, Leo and the rest of you guys. The one thing that comes to mind in reference to taking God out of schools is that I'm 30yrs old and when I was in school I don't remember learning about God and or praying in school. As a kid I was taught about God through my parents and grandparents as well as church and as I grew into a adult I formed my own opinions through my own life experiences. I am not saying that God shouldn't be allowed in school but in my opinion I send my kid to school to learn and get a education. Teaching morals, values, religion and things of that nature falls on us as parents. As Bigjon said there are video games, tv shows, and music nowadays that just cater to violence of all kinds. It is up to us as parents to raise our children and give them the attention they deserve along with teaching right from wrong. My Mom and Dad drilled into my head their way of life. Treat people as you would like to be treated. If parents would actually take the time to raise their kids instead of letting Tv and video games do it I believe the world would be a much better place.
Now as far as guns go, namely "Self Defense Weapons". Bigjon hit the nail on the head with that one. I have been to Iraq twice, I have seen first hand what these people are capable of and it scared the hell out of me then and frankly still scares the hell out of me now because we have people in our own country just as evil. I learned two simple words in the military that will always be stuck in my head.."complacency kills" meaning always be ready, never let your guard down. No law will ever keep a gun out of a killer's hands just like no law will ever keep the drug out of a addicts hands or keep the drunk out from behind the steering wheel.
I have owned guns and hunted all my life, all my guns are mainly hunting guns, but in a instant in the middle of the night or broad daylight that hunting gun could become a Self Defense Weapon and we have a right as American Citizens to protect our families and ourselves from the evil in this country as well as the world and that is why I choose to own guns. I really hope I did not offend anyone by my remarks as this is just my opinions as I see them and I also respect every bodies opinions as they see them.

I own several type of firearm/weapons. I enjoy them all. The complexities of some designs as well as the simplicities of others. Some are single shots, revolvers, lever actions and yes semi-automatics. I even own an AR-15, the so called assault rifle. Their all only as dangerous as the person handling them. I guess I get the same satisfaction from shooting and practicing with them as I do when I do a good job building something with my saw, drill and hand tools. I've learned to do something well and do it safely. You know, pride in a job well done. Just like a good group at 20yds with my 357 or ringing the 10" steel plate on the 300 yd range with my 7mm08 and even a good buck with the old muzzle loader. Their all just another piece of equipment. If some day the gun grabbers succeed in banning us from owning this kind of equipment, then the crazy people that commit these kinds of acts will just find another way to do their damage. Be it a Glock 19, a machete, a chainsaw or a jet plane into a building. It seems to me, we'd be better off trying to figure out why a 20 year old boy would even consider or could even stomach pointing a loader gun at a beautiful little 8 year old child and pulling the trigger twice. I don't care if it's a hand gun, an AK-47 or a single shot 22. It's not the equipment, It's the operator!

I've written and deleted several replies to this post. Just as shadslinger said it is an issue that carries much passion with it. Bigun and bigjon hit the nail on the head. And Shadslinger, I'm only 50 but I remember praying in school every morning and having a weekly bible class. I also remember the day, in the middle of the school year that it was stopped and ruled illegal. This was done by one woman. Way to many parents wont feed and clothe their children properly much less take them to church. It's bigger than prayer in school. It's about breaking the family unit and the principles this country was founded on. My heart goes out to the families of those children and teachers. And every time something like this happens It brings us one step closer to gun control. There are too many politicians, lawyers, judges and special interest groups that will twist the meaning of the Constitution for political or financial gain. I carry because I chose to because I have the RIGHT to. As does my wife and daughter. I just wonder what the outcome would have been not only in Connecticut but Virginia Tech if only one or two trusted members of the facility would have been carrying. The only thing that will stop a bad man with a gun is a good man with a gun.

I spent some time shopping for a .223 AR15 last year but, I didn't purchase one because I thought it was to much money but, now that there is all this talk about banning them. I might buy one before they get banned.... I guess I want one because the Government might tell me I can't have one in the future.

you know i am a nut about striper fishing and i am 65 years old,,,i also own around 60 guns,,rifles mostly remington model 7 of all caliber and collectibles,,hand guns mostly simi-automatic pistols,,and possess a right to carry concealed gun permit,,all locked up in 2 fat boy liberty gun safes....i don't shoot them for fun ,,mostly ammo is too expensive for wasting away,,all rifles are eqipped with nicon bdc 3x 9x 40 scopes,,,all said you might ask why i am not a NUT out to kill,,i am a vietnam war veteran,,its because like millions of other americans we have our 2nd amendment right tohace, carry, and use if need to and if the nay sayers get one foot in that door they won't stop till america is dissarmed for the foreign enemy to attact and destroy us...the reason said by japan they did not continue to attact the homeland was they new that americas largest army was its people armed and they would have been destroyed in their effort===i have no need or desire for a AK-R47 or any of its type,,,i heard that pierce morgan litterly butcher a gun rights man on tv and my answer was to send that idiot back to england with his mile high anti -american bull s**t,,,,we will always have mental and bad apples in our mist with drugs egging them along because they will always have their weapons,,its only the good guys that they go after to disarm because its easy to find us and make a big show and self politcal gain,,,,America should fight for their constitunal rights and stay Free==All the idiots doing these horriffic acts should be put to death immediately in the same horriffic manner,,that will stop the future acts,,,instead they get a free ,paid ride for life;;;;thats all i have to say about that

I would like to add a email that my father sent me the other day.

Those are amazing numbers, and I feel safer, but I'd feel a lot more safe if modern warfare didn't have a so much to do with the threat of nuclear warheads and dirty bombs.
I realize it seems like once a ball is rolling, it is all downhill, but I honestly don't think any significant portion of this country or of its officials intend or desire to revoke the right to keep and bare arms, where arms are hunting rifles and pistols. Very many are going to try to re-instate the ban on sales of semi-automatics though. I'm not sure it will do any good in the face of people as deranged as this recent perpetrator. I fail to understand how he got that f'ed up.
But I didn't start the thread to argue or to state my opinion -- rather to hear from people who feel like the semi ban is a bad thing. I think there are a lot of very well stated and interesting personal viewpoints here that a majority of the rest of the country, especially those who don't live in a rural community, could learn from.
