I need some recommendations on a spinning reel and rod for redfish that can be used for striper as back up for guest who cannot cast baitcasters. I have been using shimano reels and have been very happy with them but all I have are LC's and baitcaster which did not work so well popping corks. Thanks

I like Shimano too. I have the perfect Redfish/Striper set-up. Sahara 4000 series reel on a Duckett Inshore, Med Heavy, Fast action 7' rod. For 200 bucks you can't beat it.

I have 3 Stradics and one Sustain. I don't see any notable difference on the Sustain to merit a price increase over the Stradic. However, I would gladly pay 200 bucks for a fishing reel that lasts and feels great versus spending 50 bucks for a real that is clunky and has to be replaced in a year or so. My oldest Stradic is over 10 years old and you wouldn't know it.
The Stradic was my first higher priced reel and started my love affair with Shimano. A Stradic 3000 paired with a med heavy Teramar rod is the ticket. 2500 is not enough spool to throw a 2oz spoon across the lake and a med light rod will bend way too much if you troll with it. Additionally, the med heavy is perfect for bringing in 15 pounders on a spoon.
Oh.. All of the above is based on using 30lb braid. I hate mono on a spinning reel.

Remember Yam..... it's for Reds too. If you're on the 40+ Reds.....you'll want a 4K series real. Might be wrong but those Redfish can get into a spool.

One more idea is the Penn Battle. I've used them with Arch and they are very smooth and tight. For the price....you can't go wrong.

I use Okuma Avenger fab- 55b Bait runners loaded with 40# braid. They are not expensive reels. I use them to throw poppers for Big Reds and use the with live bait for Stripers. They work great for both. Love the sound of braid being taken by a big drum. Bill

I like the smallest reel and rod possible for comfort purposes. I'm pretty sure if I ever landed a 40 pounder and he was close to spooling me, that would be the last time I used that reel for that application. Or worse yet... Getting spooled. That would suck! I can toss 3/4 of my 3000 out with 30 pound braid. Definitely get a 4000 or higher.

You cant beat the price on the Penn rod reel 3k at $119 and $129 for the 4k. They hold up in the salt.

Thanks for all the options. sound like the 4k series is what I need, I am going to see what I can get fairly quickly since we are going next weekend. Gator is that the regular Duckett or is there any benefit to the micro eyes on a spinning rod? We have a couple of there baitcasting rods and my son really likes them.

Micro-guides work well for casting rods (I have one) not on spinning rods. In fact, I can't imagine them on a spinning rod. Check out the Duckett site below. archenemy has used mine and mentioned that he liked it. It is well balanced and has plenty of backbone, casts a mile too. duckettfishing.com/product.php?productid=16260&cat=276&page=1

The Penn combos are heavier and will take there toll on you after about 700 casts

It looked a little odd it had the big eye then micro inside of it. Arch that is a good point... We have shimano 300ej on 8'6" loomis musky rods and after a day of casting will give you a work out.

I think that the big eye assists with the line unloading before it gets to the smaller eyes to help maintain the cone. It does look a bit strange but it functions well for me.

We use mainly 4000 reels for the big drum, but have some 3000 and 3500 reels too. They need to hold a good amount of line in order to use on the big reds. The lightest reel you can get is best. You do a lot of casting and it will wear you out with a heavy outfit. I went with the Quantum Smoke 4000 reels this year and they made a huge difference. Think they weigh around 9.5 oz. They hold a good amount of 40 lb braid. The micro spinning rods seem to make a little difference with wind knots for me. I fish braid almost exclusively on my spinning combos. Any help with wind knots is good.
