old thread, i know, hard to believe no one recommended a Pflueger. the Pflueger spinning reels are really good. I think the Pflueger President is one of the best bang for buck spinning reels there is, at only $60 too. They also get great reviews around the web.

Hey, I’m using the St. Croix - Inshore Spinning Rod and Shimano Stradic FJ Spinning Reel and its perfect for me. But I’m not telling you that it’s perfect for everyone. You can check the reviews of those. If you like it then use it.

+1 on Shimano Stradic and Sahara. I have 2 of each. Both perform magnificently. Dollar for dollar, that Sahara is my most reliable and capable reel. I've used both in salt water conditions - no issues. I also agree on the 4000 size spool for reds. If you get into a big bull it'll spool ya. You also have to be prepared for other species w/ the ability to drain your spool.

I have 2 shimano nasci 5000 reels. $100 each. As good a reel as the stradics. Worth looking at.

I definitely concur with the NASCI recommendation if you're a Shimano guy -- great reels that perform above their price point.
However, my top spinning reel choice is the Daiwa BG series, released earlier this year. I love mine (in 3000), and consider the BG the best spinning reel I've ever used... These reels are absolute tanks, and they also were Field & Stream's 2017 pick (taken with a big grain of salt, of course) and are very highly reviewed across the forums. The BGs run roughly one to one+ sizes larger than their Shimano equivalents. I initially purchased a 3500, which was too large for an all-purpose "heavy weight large mouth to medium inshore" reel -- the BG 3500 is roughly the same as a Shimano 5000, maybe a hair larger. I opted for the BG 3000, which is roughly equivalent to my Shimano and Pflueger 4000 reels, but lighter and with a 15.5lb drag. The BG 3000 on a 7' M/MH St Croix Premier with 20lb Tuffline 4Force braid is my go-to outfit for both bass and stripers (when casting). At ~$100, the BG is one of the best fishing purchases I've made. Like the NASCI, there's a great deal of value here. I also have a Stradic CI4+, which was a gift -- and although it's a fine reel, I prefer the BG in every respect (and also don't see $120 difference between the Stradic and the NASCI, honestly!).
Short of the BG, two other spinning reels that I recommend are: 1. Pflueger President (6935), along with its XT variant (1oz lighter and different cosmetics) -- tough to find a better $50 spinning reel series, whether for trout, small mouth or otherwise.
2. Surprisingly, I love my $40 Okuma Stratus V (a DSG exclusive) (size 45) -- have not had a single issue with it, and have it on a 7' M Ugly Stick Elite. I wanted something that I could use in the James for cats and small mouth, on SML for bass and stripers, and at the beach for catching blues. At $80 or so, it's a fantastic combo that, frankly, fishes next to my more expensive gear, while being worry-free (I don't feel as though I need to baby it).
So, in summary, I would recommend a Daiwa BG, in whatever size best suits you. I plan to purchase additional BGs for back up and other applications. At $100, I think the BG is the best value presently available in the market. If you prefer Shimano over Daiwa, then check out the NASCI series. If you're interested in a less expensive reel, you can't go wrong with the Pflueger President. And for even less, I think that the DSG Okuma Stratus V is a great find. Try out a few and pick one that meets your budget and preferences, and don't look back!

I like the Okuma Cedros salt water spinning reel -- I use the 45speed -- I use them for Cobia -- run 50lb braid on them, they have 25lb pounds of drag and that is a lot, great balance and light for the size -- great price on them because they are on closeout. Bought three - 3 years ago for $240 on sale. Bought 3 more this summer and they were only $120 amazon, could not believe the price but they are not making them anymore but worth the $$$ -- If you want a bigger beast they have 55 and 65 but just to bulky for me. the 45 are perfect and can handle up to 70lb cats and 50lb cobia. good luck -- great value for the $$ if you want spinning

Hello, I agree with you that Shimano stradic is a good reel. Its line management is superb. As a spinning reel, it has great power. But I have a little problem with it. its little heavy compared to other similar sized reels. And also you can’t drag smoothly on the highest end of its drag range.

Pfluegers are excellent reels. Daiwa also makes some really good spinning reels. I have used Diawa for many years and they have been flawless.
