Weather: Less than desirable
Water: 55
Bait: 6-12" gizz 4-5" ales
Time: 630 - 330
Techniques: Freelined Planers, 2 redi rig bobbers, couple dlines
Came up to the lake on Thursday knowing that this would probably be the best day to catch fish. Began the search for bait around 1:00 and about 15 gallons of gas later we finally found them around 3:30 in 1-2 ft of water. Filled the tank with 12 or so 10-15" gizzards and ran back down the lake and fished a nearby creek. Before we even got the spread out had a nice 10lber on a bank side planer to the boat. Pulled the creek for another 30 minutes and moved to another creek I had never fished. Our biggest bait got blown up right as it passed a dock and about 1 minute into the fight the hook pulled. It was getting late so we decided to call it a day. I thought bait was so easy to get we dumped the remaining 6 baits we had..this ended up being a mistake.
Friday we went back to where we had caught bait around 8:00am but there was no sign of them. Made several blind casts in the area, but they had moved to deeper water and were scattered. So began a day long journey of trying to find enough bait to fish the tournament with. Destroyed a 10ft net and ripped a 8 footer partially that can be repaired. Towards the end of the day we only had 9 good gizzards and a dozen or so ales. We knew we were in the right spot at the end of the day trying to catch bait when Yam showed up and brought us some luck and we caught 3 more decent gizzards. Earlier in the day we were throwing in a creek catching some at the 30ft depth when I pulled up this 24lb flatty in the net...
Satisfied with 12 baits we put them to bed in hopes they would last us the whole day of the tourney. The plan for this trip was to make short pulls and move on if we didn't get bit. The previous tournaments we had pretty much stayed in 1 or 2 places the entire time. This proved to be a fatal mistake as the first two places we pulled we marked fish and a large school in another creek that were sitting on the bottom. In hindsight probably should have stayed on top of the area we were pulling until they turned on. Team Linesiders turned in a big ol skunk for the day after it was all said and done. I will say we definitely learned more on this trip than previous, being that we moved so much we now know a lot of the creek names on the Roanoke side from Halesford on up to Hardy. The best part of the tournament is fishing with a bunch of guys that enjoy it as much as we do and I can say the whole series was a blast look forward to fishing in the Fall with everyone. Thanks Mike and Tyler and all others behind the scenes that contributed to make the series a success. Congratulations to Team Squidhound for the win and the other teams that placed yesterday.
