I had the pleasure of taking a long time friend of mine on the boat today that has never striper fished prior to today!! Put in at Scruggs ramp at 7am...had bought some jumbo's from Dewayne yesterday as my "just in case". Water temps were from 52-54.... Set out first to the back of GC, and ale's were flipping EVERYWHERE!! A few throws and we were set as far as bait goes with 2 dozen ale's and a dozen jumbo's. Headed back out of GC and first stop was up bull run. After running 2 planers, 2 down lines and a free line out back, we marked some fish but none wanted anything to do with our spread. We then moved onto b&b's creek for the afternoon. Turned out to be a good move (FOR THE MOST PART) Ill get to that in a minute. We put out our same spread, with 2 ale's on the planers, and 2 jumbos on the down lines, and finally another decent sized ale on the free line. After about 20-25 mins of listening to some George Strait, which must have got the attention of some hungry stripers looking for a honky tonk and a cold beverage...we hooked up. The down line that was set at 15' went off first and my good friend was on the rod with his very first striper on the other end of the line!!! He was like a kid in a candy store, after letting him play the fish for a couple minutes, I tended the net and the fish was landed. A 27" pig, and he was grinning from ear to ear, and so was I, and very happy for my buddy. While snapping pic's and the congratulations were being given, as we were releasing the first fish the other down rod that was at 25' doubled over. I had him just crank the reel a few times, then pick it out of the holder, this time a 28" was invited on board the blue nitro. After the commotion was over for the first 2 fish, we continued on our quest. And hooked up with 2 other fish on...yet again, the down lines with the jumbo minnows. After a little fight one was landed and the other got tangled in structure and snapped the line. NOW......for the LOOOOOONG part of the day.....prior to leaving bull run and onto B&B's I mentioned to my friend "i hope we have enough fuel to get there, and back to the ramp" my dumb thinking along with the passion...ok stubbornness to put my best friend on his first striper, I chanced it. WEELLLLLLLLLL, we made it up, but didn't make it ALL the way back, around Christmas tree island, the 150 mercury lost a little power, started sputtering, then we were just floating. After a few not good words, I found the bright side...I got to test out my new Ipilot advanced auto pilot feature for about a mile, when along came a friendly couple, who gave us a tow to the crazy horse gas pumps. After thanking them, and purging the air from the fuel system we were on our way back to the ramp. All in all, we both had a very fun, exciting day on the lake. I got to introduce a new person, and best friend to the world of striper fishing on SML, and he got to reel in some good fish. And what kind of trip with 2 friends could end on a better note than running out of fuel and getting to talk fishing, and how much he was hooked on striper for an hour of just floating. If so happens that the friendly couple that gave us a tow is on this forum, and reading this...THANK YOU. I will pass it on to whomever needs assistance in the future as well!! ill also post some pics soon as I figure out how, going to give it a shot anyhow. cough cough Mike, help please cough cough.
