I have been thinking about adding a spinning rod and reel to my ,already overwhelming, collection of set ups. I would mostly use it for jigging. Been watching wmards buddy Mark use a spinning rod for jigging and it has me intrigued. I am looking at a 7' Duckett MH spinning rod and the new Shimano TP 4000 series reel. I think this would be a sweet setup. But way too much cash. I am also considering the Penn Battle as it is more in my price range. Thoughts?? Does anyone have the Battle?? www.shimanofish.com.au/products/fishing-reels/spinning/twinpower.html?filter%3d

I know it's not on your list, but , the Pfleguer President line, or perhaps the model above, are good solid, smooth reels and I'd had good service from them over 6 years that I've had a pair. I realize they don't get used every trip, but they are affordable and solid.

I have a couple of the smaller Pflueger Presidents I use for walleye and like them. I struggle with spending a pile of money on something (Twin Power) that will get little use and the Pflueger or Penn Battle are priced well below the Shimano and will serve the purpose.

I have three of the Pflueger President series and love them. $59 with an occasional $10 rebate. I don't think you can beat the value for that purpose.

Gator I have two of the battle 3000s on medium 7ft penns. Catching any striper over 10lbs with this setup will kill the fish. Not enough rod the reels are solid.

I have always liked the Mitchell 406 for salt water and fresh water. You can still find them on ebay and decent prices on extra spools to change out the line size.
I can't see spending that kind of money on a spinning reel.

Used the shimano bait runners in the bay two weeks ago. They use spot for striper and let em run for the count of ten before setting the hook. My next purchase could be one of these.

Arch, the Baitrunners are solid. I had one several years ago. Think it was a 7500. Used it for a live bait rod for sailfish. It's somewhere on the bottom of the ocean now. Oops.

Looks like they have a graphite frame which makes them expensive. I'd never reach the goal of 42 rods at that price.

My favorite is the BPS Johnny Morris Carbonlite.

I think the Pfleguer President is the best value out there for the money. I bought 2 of the cheaper Penn reels and sold them before I used them because after I took them out the package they were not what I expected. They were not Battles and I can't remember what the name of them was but the price was about the same. I really like the spinning reels for jigging with the power pro slick braid. If you need to cast to breaking fish or whatever you can throw it a mile!

I use Shimano Stradic reels (3000) and Shimano Teramar rods (mh, super fast tip) . I also use 30 pound braid and tie on a 4 - 6 ft flourocarbon leader. The braid provides the best feel and casts a mile. The 3000 spool is the smallest spool that provides enough room for jigging. I have a few 2500s that I can spool by casting a heavy spoon. Can't spool a 3000. If you are jigging schools that are smaller fish, I prefer a medium light rod. In the Fall, the medium heavy is a must!
The teramar rods are tough as ugly sticks but way more sensitive. I have yet to break one in 10 years of crazy Yam fishing!
