I am not a fan of the new Ugly Stik's. The old 7'MH rod for $30 was pretty much unbeatable. The old rods have become really tough to get. I couldn't find any online and looked in a bunch sporting good stores with no luck either. I was in a Gander Mt a few weeks ago talking to the guy in the fishing department and told him what I was after. He got on his computer and checked the stock of all Gander stores. He found there were 100 or so old model rods in their stores. He suggested I call Ganders customer service and see if they would help me get the rods I wanted from the other stores. I called customer service the next day and got nowhere. My next call was to the Gander store were the guy helped me. I asked him to give me the names of some of the stores that showed the old rods in stock. I called several of the stores and they agreed to ship the rods directly to me. So if any of you guys want/need some of the old model rods you may try this route. I saw a few of the older version catfish rods at the Bedford Walmart just a few days ago. I already have 3 of them and I do like them.

I actually used a sanding drum on my dremel, then used a buffing wheel to smooth it out. I really didn't take much off before it fit. If I get a chance I'll throw up a pic. I finally got around to "trimming" mine as well. Used the sanding drum on a Dremel but didn't go the buffing route - probably shows About this much needs to come off - maybe abut less..... It took just a couple of minutes per rod. (And yes my OCD is setting in looking at how this is not symmetrical - would really liked some type of lathe to use on this ) One thing to note - as the reel seat and grip is higher up the rod blank than the old rods it means that more butt of the rod hangs out the bottom of the QuickDraw and into the boat. May make getting the rod out of the holder tougher when a good fish is on.

would really like done type of late to use on this ) Are you speaking English? They're not bad trimmed up some - still not sure why they messed with the handle which was perfect. They did fix the guides I think - the 1st generation striper rods I had bought in the past couple years are junk - guides are all breaking out. The older ones were better. These 2nd generation eyes should be better.

That's always one of my fears, especially when it's not my rod, is for the rod to go flying out of my hands due to being slimed. I used these new rods over the weekend and didn't have a problem with them.

my only complaint on the new rods is the length of the butt...it definitely extends out from the holder...interferes with some features in the stern and lessens the pass space near the console...and they are harder to get out when you have a good fish on. Fortunately I don't often catch big fish...

Fortunately I don't often catch big fish... A long and wide butt will certainly help you keep your slimy rod in your hand. However, there is a limit to how long and wide each of us prefer our butts. And many folks do not get their rods slimy.
