these are different rods.... well - at least cosmetically. These are the "species specific" rods - but the tag on the rod does say it is a graphite / fiberglass blend...... I may be wrong but I thought the old ones were all fiberglass. Will be interesting to see if they feel different

That is a good thing if it says fiberglass and graphite.
I bought one of the Catfish rods in the spring with the beautiful butt. It has the clear tip so I assume it is fiberglass and graphite construction. By producing all their rods with this construction it saves on cost and probably less breakage for warranty replacement.
I also thought the old rods were all fiberglass and the warranty period was three years.

Anyone tried turning it down in a lathe? I have a lathe but don't need a rod at the moment.

Used these rods today, gotta say I really like them. They have a much lighter feel than the older style. Feels just a tough though. I got the striper 7' mh rods. The tips are very sensitive but the rod has a lot of backbone.

Okay...what is the final verdict? I'm on the market for 4 new rods to replace my broken dreams. MH Ugly Striper?? I am seeing 39 bucks across the board.

Yam..... I love these rods, to me they feel lighter in hand and a bit more sensitive, but they still have a lot of backbone that ugly sticks are known for. I've got 2 of the 7ft MH

I have 2 and then the old ones. The 2 new ones do have a nice feel. If your using quick draws make sure they are the newer model because I've heard the do fit thru the bottom of the older ones.

I know this is an older thread but I'm in the same position . I'm new to striper fishing but I just ordered 4 of the C3 Striper Specials and am looking for the right rod and line for them. I currently have 3 of the M/H 7ft catfish rods that I have that I use for cats. . I went to Gander Mountain tonight compared the the m/h 7ft striper rod to the catfish rod and didn't notice much of a difference. I did notice the difference in handle length and the new eyes. I wish they would of had the m/l on hand but they didn't. So I bought the one m/h 7ft striper rod and ordered a 7 and a 7"6 in the medium light. As you know a7"6 in m/h is available. The salesman said that when they come in if I decided that I don't like them it's no problem to return them.
So here are my questions, now that you have had an opportunity to fish them what do you think. Which version is better striper or catfish and if striper which action and length .
I anticipate myself pulling planer boards to the sides and a few lines straight off the back and perhaps a downline. I don't know all of the striper lingo yet in case I got something wrong. Thanks

Thanks I once only owned Ugly Stiks. Then for some reason unbeknownst to me, I developed a taste for ridiculously overpriced rods. In the last 2 months I went from 0 Ugly Stiks to 12 Ugly Stiks and I LOVE THEM! The gimbal butt should help me from dropping my rod in the water and they are as others have said...very sensitive yet still have a backbone. Just buy them and don't think twice.

Do you have all m/h or did you buy some of the m/l also? There were some posts that mentioned that perhaps a m/l was more appropriate for down rods. Do you find that to be case and if so which length? Or, perhaps it mostly personal preference and it really doesn't matter much at all? I have a tendency to overthink things and make simple things complicated.
Thanks

I have a tendency to overthink things and make simple things complicated. There is no one on here like that MH for everything but downrods. Past recommendation has been ML for downrods so that the fish does not feel the rod at first - but I'm starting to change my mind. The ML are just so light - ok for fish under 10 lbs which is most of what you'll get down lining smaller baits especially in the summer - but if you hook a decent fish they don't do much. Tyler's used the 7' 6" ML which not only gets you a little more seperation in the baits but has a little more backbone.

At Gander Mountain last night I bought one m/h and ordered a m/l in both lengths. So I will probably return the 7'0 m/l and get another 7'6 as well as a few more m/h's now that I know those are the right ones for planers.
Thanks again

You will find that your fishing methods might dictate a different rod type and style. I prefer a 6'6 mh rod for downlines because with circle hooks and heavy strikes the fish will hook themselves a lot. With 2 guys in the boat and 10 lines out that is important because you won't be standing next to the rod when they hit. If you use circle hooks on planers that mh 7ft rod gives just enough that they will not feel resistance yet is strong enough to get a hookup when the rod loads up. Starting out you might want to experiment a bit before you purchase a bunch of rods that aren't fit for your methods.

Once I manage to boat a few stripers the confidence level should increase. Heck once I manage to catch some decent bait I'll feel better.

I am not a fan of the new Ugly Stik's. The old 7'MH rod for $30 was pretty much unbeatable. The old rods have become really tough to get. I couldn't find any online and looked in a bunch sporting good stores with no luck either. I was in a Gander Mt a few weeks ago talking to the guy in the fishing department and told him what I was after. He got on his computer and checked the stock of all Gander stores. He found there were 100 or so old model rods in their stores. He suggested I call Ganders customer service and see if they would help me get the rods I wanted from the other stores. I called customer service the next day and got nowhere. My next call was to the Gander store were the guy helped me. I asked him to give me the names of some of the stores that showed the old rods in stock. I called several of the stores and they agreed to ship the rods directly to me. So if any of you guys want/need some of the old model rods you may try this route.
