Ahhh I read John's post as line counter. Sorry..rushing through reading.
Line control? Okay I guess I need to lubricate all gears. It just irks me that Shimano doesn't have a simple way to do this and I always wondered if this meant that the enclosures and tolerances are so tight, no need to to do anything.

Yam, I have the old style Calcutta's 400A's (the gold ones)and they are a piece of cake to service. I will say that they were a bit daunting the first few times I took them apart. I use the Shimano star drag grease and for the worm gear I use the reelx oil. I only service them once a year and they are over 15 years old. They were mostly used in salt and I always gave them a good rinsing with fresh water after each use and I was amazed at the salt build up in them the first time I serviced them. Kinda thought the same thing you are thinking-such a tight reel should be maintenance free. Not. I also have the Abu's 6500's and I don't like taking them apart.

Here's an example of how well made the Curados are. Dropped it in the New River, water was about chest deep. Came back 1 week later. My son found it. took it home, cleaned off all the moss, put on new line, sprayed with pb blaster, wiped off and I'm still using it. that was like 6-7 years ago!

Flip the real upside down. The worm gear is the spiral rod your line controller slides back and forth on.

Hey mward, did you pull the trigger on a new fleet of reels? If so. which way did you go? Decided on the Tekota 500 (non-line Counters) to phase out my existing Pfleguer Trions. Got a few for Christmas presents and hopefully more to come for my Birthday in the Spring Only down-side is the clicker, but at 1.2 mph or so it will pull out my boards - or I just tighten the spool tension knob and let it go without the clicker. So, after a year of owning the Tekota 500's, how do you like them. Also, have you used them at the Bay, and if so what did you catch, and how do you like them for the bay. Im asking because I am searching for a reel to use at the Bay and the lake. Or anyone else have suggestions for a level wind reel to be used at the Bay and the lake. Thanks, Harley - getting ready to start chasing the dollar bills!

Mike i am using 8 of the Shimano Tekota 500lc's had them for 3 years with no regrets. Cant remember what they cost for sure. I agree to the clicker being a little stiff however would definitely buy them again. tommyfishes, have you used these reels at the Bay, and if so, how was the experience. Thanks - Harley

Thanks - Harley Hey Harvey, I have not used them at the bay, if i fished the bay i couldn't think of any reason they wouldn't be a great reel to have aboard. Hands down i would buy these again!!!! I did accidentally kick one of these out of the boat the other day almost cried

Mike the red reels were from my old days, Abu garcia 5500 and 6500's The drag was the biggest problem, you could lube and get it working good then seemed before you knew it was sticking again. The Tekota's i have not touched. Yes i do use the LC's for both planer and down lines, limited room in the old ranger Tommy I used to think I had drag problems as well. Turns out it was worn line pawl on worm gears. You looked at that?

I will say the tekotas have been flawless I have not cleaned, oiled nothing!!

Harley - so far I've loved the Tekotas - solid, great smooth drag. One thing to note - if you get the non-line counter version the reels do not auto-engage when you turn the handle. However for a around $5 or less per reel in parts you can change a few internal parts out to add that "feature" back if you want. I have the parts - just need to get around to opening the reels and changing a few.....
I would have no concern using these reels at the Bay either - I'd of course rinse them and take care of them as you would any reel used in the salt, but with proper servicing I expect them to last a long time.

I spent lots of money on tekota reels. Then my buddy gave me a bunch of his ambassador 6500s. I considered them my junk reels. 4 tekotas and 5 ambassadors.
I will say that I like the tekotas for heaving long tosses and for down lining. But for planer board fishing... those ambassadors seem to get pulled out first. Not as smooth but very functional!

I've gotta quantum reel I've had since I was like 16 it's a great reel. If you file the spool down they cast really well to.
Cheap and basically indestructible.
I won't be surprised if there's some ridicule associated, but on any day you can't beat a Zebco, seriously hard to break those things

But if your looking for super awesomeness Penn and Shimano are good high dollar options.
It's like the age old Craftsman or snap on debate. They all get er done lol
