Sweet. You got one of the original handles. Out of the handles they have done I like that one the best. I had just got another one in last month and had to have it built and shipped specifically for me because I wanted that magnum ball handle. The warranty should be for the life of the reel regardless of owner but I will find out for you for sure and let you know.

For boards I run the shimano Corvalus 400's. I've had great luck with them and at around $80 a piece they are hard to beat! Tekota LC's for light and downlines. I've always been partial to Shimano.

Hey mward, did you pull the trigger on a new fleet of reels? If so. which way did you go? Decided on the Tekota 500 (non-line Counters) to phase out my existing Pfleguer Trions. Got a few for Christmas presents and hopefully more to come for my Birthday in the Spring Only down-side is the clicker, but at 1.2 mph or so it will pull out my boards - or I just tighten the spool tension knob and let it go without the clicker.

So now it's time to replace all your uglys to Crucials! ?

Take a look at the upgrades that sutor made for his okumas. Can't go wrong for the money. I have two of them and still use them. granted they are not like my Calcutta's but they work. Beats a beer can, mono, hook and a rock. Sure was cool to watch the Haitians use those things.

shimano curado/ quantum tour edition pt/ penn for the larger stuff. the shimano has more torque, but the quantum is lighter and a little smoother, great for those who fish a lot of artificial....we cast a lot to catch em!! LOL

Prodigal. Were talking a $100 budget at most on my end. Anyone try the Penn squall series? They look nice and priced right.

Ambassadour 6500s can't be beat. Right now on Amazon 68.06 a piece with free shipping. Common mistake with all bait casters is not keeping the worm gears lubricated. Even a rain shower will wash away the oil and cause friction problems, particularly if the rods are in vertical rod holders when it rains. I keep mine oiled up and never had any problems. I have 16 6500's some older then many of the guys on this site and they're still working. I bought two new ones a couple years ago when folks said they were made different and I simply don't see it. Take care of them and they just work.

Anybody have a good procedure for maintenance? The manual just says to give it to the dealer. I have broken them down and you have to be very careful with all the tiny pieces. My Shimano spinning reels have a simple plastic screw that you take off and drop oil into.

Worm gears are attached to line control in and out. When they are not kept lubed it produces friction and will affect your drag washers. I got this from a Garcia tech rep at the Harrisburg show a couple years ago. Main problem in the 6500s has been drag sticking(appearance) when in fact it is the friction in the worm gear.

So Tekota owners...does this mean that we don't have anything to do in terms of maintenance? That is, if we don't have line counters.
