Generally If I cant throw it on a baitcaster (to light of a lure) or need really light line I'll use a spinning reel.

My preference:
Lake fishing for Bass & Striper fishing......Bait cast with the occasional spinning rod for finesse fishing.
Spinning rod & reel for all river fishing, by boat and wading, except James River catfishing.

Like everyone says, depends on type of fishing, type of lure, lure weight. Most of use both, I have both and use them, I even keep a old closed face reel on the boat in case someone don't know to throw a baitcaster, better to let them use it than mess up my baitcasters.

I use bait casters because I love how the line gets tangled when I cast a heavy weight real hard and don't stop the spool once the weight hits the water.
My son is nine and he's good with a spinning rod but he sees no point to owning a bait casting reel, other than self torture. Mostly we cast off the dock. I think he'll get it down, but he's going to get a lot of practice at untangling spools first.

I agree with asleepafloat, I find picking out bird nests just so relaxing. I really appreciate how the line tangles just when the fish break. That is when I need to relax the most and the bait casting reels helps me with that too. ;>)

Yeah Striper, I have found over the years if you want them to start busting, throw a rig out ,hang it up, break it off then start retying it, have a top water bait ready !!

I love hittin the lake with a new baitcaster you just spooled up with some good line ya saved up for a month to buy ,pull up to a dock go to skip a jig under there and backlash it so bad you have to cut it off, or pick it out and have a bad place in it about half a decent cast out. The first one I ever bought I returned to the store, There seemed to be something wrong with it every time I cast it , ha ha ha . Also found out there not the best choice for pond fishing from the bank around bushes. And who named them a
"Bait Caster" yall ever tried throwing a baited cork for bream with one of them things ?? If ya haven't ,Don't.

Thanks for havin me , I do all kinds of fishin,from bluegill to shark ive always been a spinning reel kinda guy but I got a few med/ baitcasters I like, I mostly use for trolling,freelining & I like the way they feel with a big fish on, so I was going to try use them for other larger species ,casting bait for big cats, throwin big plugs in the river for musky, but they are givin me a hard time with casting & I dont find it relaxing untangling line,haha ,sounds like some of you guys r havin the same problem,& the replies were classic, had to laugh,

Setting up a bait cast reel will help stop the back lash a lot! I pretty much use this guys way to set it up! www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DCXdzRak5Y&feature=youtube_gdata_playerTighting the tension all they way and slowly loosen til your bait falls slow! Tighten some more if it still backlashes! Use the magnetic break to fine tune! Spinning: usually 3/8 oz or less with 10lb braid or 6-8lb mono! When I need extremely long distance for my heavy baits I will use spinning! 10lb braid! Only thing with spinning gear is you can't so called "horse" a fish in. Bait casting: 12mono to even 50or 80lb braid on a bass reel like in video! It's pretty much for the sure pleasure of #s if you do hit the school right and everything is dialed in! Also helps pull the big ones out of the cover! Spinning reel thats not going to happen! Practice makes perfect!!! I have two spinning rod, and prolly 30 casting!! Like the other guys said each set up has its own place! |

I am not comfortable with a bait caster when casting at night so I'll use spinning gear then. Use a mix of spinning and bait casters other times for artificial. For live bait I only use non-spinning reels

Pretty decent video. I fished a tourney on bugs a few years back, I was the non boater at the time, wind was howling and we were throwing spinnerbaits around the bridge pilings,after backlashing 7-8 cast I put some 17 lb line on the one spinning reel I had, Got three that day 14 lbs and change, Broke the borrowed spinnerbait off and didn't get another bite.
