My wife and daughter joined me for an evening trip. It was windy and sunny, water was muddyish, and 49 degrees and the air was about the same.
We caught decent bait around 2pm, but it took a lot of work. It was mostly 20-30’, and that’s where I caught it. Mostly 7-9” gizzards.
We set out a bank side spread of all very short freelines on sunny banks. First spot was totally dead.
Moved upstream half a mile and my wife got a 20.5” smallmouth on the biggest gizzard we had. Go figure. Shortly after, it all broke loose. I broke a striper off within net reach, then turned to see another board buried with the rod tip in the water and peeling drag. That one broke off too. Spun around, retied and pulled it again and had several other blowups and misses. We lost one more that swam straight at us upon the hookset.
We moved closer to the ramp for the last 45 minutes and pulled some shallower water. Fish were in it, but wouldn’t eat. Baits were getting blown up every couple minutes, but not eaten.
Both fish that broke off were under the boat, and I think they both rubbed across the lower unit causing the breaks.
So that’s how it goes sometimes.
By the way, we marked a lot of fish 15-20’ deep over 20-40’ of water just off the banks.

Redbear..... Somehow I missed your post with the VDGIF links for Penhook, before making my last post. I'm not trying to horn in on your information provided. Sorry.....My bad..... Now days around here, too much information is probably a lot better, than the lack of discussions we've been having.

Understood...I just posted in another thread..if fishing down by the dam for smallies and LMB I quickly learned that fluorocarbon is your friend. You have to be careful with the rocks of course but after switching from standard mono my catch rate doubled...the water tends to be super clear down that way.
