I am ready to buy my first planer boards. I usually free line alewives about .6-.8 mph. Would anyone in the know kindly advise which brand is best and where to buy?

I like the Outcast boards. Franklin Outdoors has them in stock occasionally and had a set or two last week when I was in there. If not, you can order directly from Toby.
Captains Qtrs has plenty of the redneck planer boards also. Believe both are $25/board.

If you order Outcasts there is a shipping charge that may not be mentioned at first, or get yourself to Roanoke to pick them up in person.

Shipping cost money. Outcast boards last too and can be refurbished to new. Here is a board that's been run hard for probably 5yrs or more. The arm broke when some dumb guy stepped on it. Toby sells new arms for $5, which is actually a not a bad deal because he includes the a new offshore release which is $4. A lot of my old releases are worn out anyways. Very little paint left..it's old Decals last forever I guess.. Some fresh paint.. New arm.. Add a pigtail! All ready for another 5 years!

Are the Luhr Jensen hot shot boards too small and too light for striper fishing? They go for $12 bucks. eddiet
