Got the girlfriend to come up to the lake this weekend, so I tried to put her on her first stripers. Turned out to be a great weekend for it. Started Friday evening by casting to the shore and pulled in a 10+ pounder (forgot to bring the boca) on the third cast on a fluke within five feet of the shore. Not a bad start. Taught her how to throw the cast net that night, so she caught all our bait so we could troll the next morning. Only caught medium ales, no shad to be found. Saturday morning, on the water by 7 and within minutes she had her first striper right in the mouth of our cove. Got off by 10, way too much wind to bother fighting with, but still wound up with seven stripers all around 6-8 pounds. Good fighters though.
After lunch she wanted to go out again, so of course I said yes but figured we wouldn't catch anything, never had much luck past noon. But they were still biting in Grimes atleast, caught three more right around ten pounds each. Wind wasn't as strong but still a pain since I was operating the trolling motor on a dying battery from that morning.
Someone wanted to go catfishing that night, so we turned the dock light on for bait and set out some rods with live and cutbait. Caught a striper on the living and a small catfish on the dead right off the dock. 12 really good fish over the course of the day makes for a great fishing retreat. Even happier that she's as addicted as I am now!
Just some notes: most hits came off of 1oz downlines set around 25-30ft depths. All action came within the creeks as opposed to main channel points. As expected, biggest bait got the most action.
