Holden Beach tips

I am taking the boat to Holden Beach for the first time this June. Has anyone been there before and gained any local knowlage to share?

I will be taking the family, inlaws and one of my sons friends. The boys want to fish for flounder, reds, and trout. I want to go throw the cast net for bait and shrimp; then go fish nearshore 3-10 miles weather permitting. I do not plan on going furthur unless it is flat.

There is a king fishing tournament going on when I get there so I figured I could show up to the inlet early to watch the path everyone takes.

The Spanish should be running as well.

My wife's family goes there for a week every year in June or July and have for decades. When I make it I usually make a drive down to Calabash and go out on one of the head boats (Hurricane Fleet usually) as I'm there without a boat and my father-in-law and brother-in-law both get sea sick easily and don't want to do a charter trip.... The sea bass are usually small but occassionally there will be a decent sand shark to make it fun......

Otherwise, its surf fishing for 10" sharks or pin fish.... Hope you get some good info and can get on some good fishing from the boat.

We went to Holden when I was young, in our pop-up camper. We slung surf rigs as far as our Zebco 202's could and caught a blue on each of the hooks.

Go to Fryingpantower.com and look at the posts there, its a very good forum lot like this one as far as helping. I follow it all year as we go down in August for a week, hoping to take the boat this year. the iinnercostal is good, so are the tidal creeks use jig heads and grubs or minnows. Have you taken a boat down there before, if not make sure you have safety stuff on board, they also have the age limit like VA for having to take a class.
