Things are really starting to turn on good. The water is warming up and in the afternoons it is 50-54deg in most places. Mornings it may dip into the upper 40s in a few places. Shad catching is super easy everywhere..nuts how many good shad we have in this lake. I've stuck with my BIG shad game plan and we're boating some pretty nice fish. Lots of 15-19lb fish and many many more in the 10-14lb range. I hear of some 20lb+ being caught as well, but I have a jinx on me. I'm bound to hold the record for amount of high teens caught since my last citation (Oct 2011), but oh well, I'll catch 18lbers all day long. Hard to complain with the amount of teens SML has right now. It's an awesome fishery and getting better yearly. We just gotta keep on releasing these bigger fish. Anyways, freelined boards up on the bank are doing work. I like to pull them in the backs of creeks and areas where there is a big flat or long point that bigger fish could be hanging near. Early and late had been the hot bite on the BIG shad, but mid afternoon seemed to be decent the past two days when I got out about 330pm and 5pm. I still haven't screwed with alewives. I've caught a few monster ales in the net throwing for shad, but haven't boated any stripers on them. I like seeing a shad get rolled and busted anyways..that's what you miss with alewives. Takes all the excitement out of it.
Mward's son Matt came with us Sat evening and boated a 15 and 17lber, his biggest. That was pretty cool to see. The 17 was a drag peeler but he handled it like a champ..better than Mward himself!
I would guess the next 2-3 weeks could be really awesome leading up to the start of the spawn. I think we'll see some 30lbers show up too this year..these fish are really fat.
Some pictures (ok a lot) from the weekend...
Double 18s
Foam off can't control my Dannco right now
Skinny..almost citation (36.5")
My dehooker..
Just to further confirm my jinx, I boated 16, 17, 18, and 19lbers by myself. You can't complain though! I love it!
