Hey gang,
I was out this past week, the weather was crazy warm at 70-80 degrees and even the water temps are still mid 60s, felt like summertime.
I got up early to catch bait in Gills creek off the lights and did catch some but struggled finding any decent bait. I only caught smaller 3” alewife. Even the guides that morning seemed to struggle with volume of bait.
Not much luck for striper in gills creek overall, a few small ones.
After I ran out mid day, I went way up in bull run and caught what originally I thought were small gizzards (5-6inch), and used those the rest of the trip, but caught nothing on them. It was weird because I was on fish all throughout the upper Roanoke, and marking tons of bait. But had no luck.
When I got home it actually bothered me I had little to know success with what I thought were those gizzards, so I checked and am thinking I may have had some larger Threadfin. If so, any thoughts on using threads for bait? Most Threadfin I’ve seen are tiny and die almost immediately so I’m not convinced they weren’t gizzards, these were hearty and lasted several days.
Wish I had a pic, but don’t. Let me know your thoughts!
