Got out for half a day today. Started out perfect. Almost had be believing it would a fisherman-friendly kinda day. Nope. The rec boats showed up around 11. Wasn't bad but the bite was stingy enuff to bring me to calling it a day. I worked creeks and main lake cuts between SMLSP and the 122 bridge. Threw a variety of things - crankbaits, jig, t-rig, c-rig, and shakyhead. Had bites on all of them. Nothing big, just punks. It was still good to get some tuggage, even if they were small.
Observations: 1) WT was 69.4 at the SP when I launched; saw 71.5 at my last stop. 2) Water has a funky thing going on. Kinda cloudy, a lot like an algae bloom, but I don't think the temps have been right for that. Usually need hotter weather. In more southern waters you'll see similar conditions when the pine trees bloom. Don't think there are enuff of those in the area to create a lake-wide stain like this. It's also way late for trees to pollenate. I noticed a musty smell coming from the water as I put in. It was reminiscent of the smell you get in those first few days of turnover. Don't think that was it - too warm yet. 3) Bait was scattered and mostly in the creek channels. I did see a couple of small pods up shallow. No activity around those. 4) All of my bites came from 4-8', off of wood or rock on breaks. Crankbait bites came as the bait deflected off of wood. The bites were very tentative, almost apologetic. The fish were not in an active mood where I fished. 5) Points were the most productive structure. Main lake was better than secondary. A little wind blowing across the point helped. 6) I saw no (zero) top water activity today. It was as if the lake was dead.
And that is it, doods. Was good to be out. Will let things cool down a bit more before I go back. Will make it a weekend trip so I can get a little more focused TOW.
be safe,
B
