I got two of the boys up early for a fishing trip this morning. The water was just below 75F, and the air was 60 warming to 75. The skies were clear and hazy with Canadian wildfire smoke. The wind was calm at first, picking up some by about 10am. I pulled away from the ramp just after 6:30 and headed to Becky and Betties coves. I had some worms with me and let the boys catch sunfish along the bank for an hour or two. Meanwhile I kept a rod in the water with catfish bait and caught 2 small channels. By 9am the boys were ready for some striper fishing, although traffic was already picking up. Saw several rigs trolling with planers for stripers, but didn’t see any hookups. I trolled artificials along the main lake and small side coves between 2.5 and 3.5 mph. Two side planers and two diving planers. Hooked up twice: one largemouth and one white perch. We headed back to the ramp around 11 and by then the lake was starting to get rough already. No sign of stripers, but I was still pleased with the trip and the boys had a good time. Took the two catfish and the white perch home for dinner. Not his first, but maybe the first trip where he was doing basically everything himself.
