Hey guys, So I have 8, 7' Uglys and 3 Berkley Lightning Rods. What would be something close to the Lightning rods, but a better rod? I really like the "rods" themselves, but the cork on the seems to come apart. I bought some Catch the Fever rods, but didn't see any difference in those and the Uglys I had, other than a better reel seat. Open to ideas and brands. Thank y'all!!

I run 10 of the Back Creek Custom “live bait” rods in ML, M, and MH action for my planer board rods. My favorite is the medium blank (I have 6 of these) for SML boards. They have a fiberglass tip that blends into a graphite rod, what you get is a super soft tip with a solid backbone. Super light weight for a bait rod as well. You won’t find anything made in China (UglyStik, Catch the fever/StriperStealth, stripeX, etc) that is close to this craftsmanship either. My rods are custom to my exact needs - Mwardncsu can change literally everything on these rods to fit your needs. I still run UglyStiks for my downrods as it’s hard to beat those for dink fishing with the kids. I’m pretty tough on my equipment and have been impressed with the durability of these as well over the last year or so. Most of the StriperStealth’s I’ve seen end up in two pieces pretty quickly - plus they are really heavy like the StripeX rods.

I’ve finally found the perfect blank for live bait / planer board Striper fishing and been very happy with how they fish - as Tyler said they have a very soft tip which is good when pulling boards so as to not let the fish feel the rod too fast, but the rod has a ton of backbone. It’s a composite blank where the upper 1/3ish is fiberglass and the lower is graphite (and likely a bit of glass). Build out as Tyler’s are at 7’ 6” the rod is about a 1/3 less weight of some of the production Striper rods on the market - I know they stay in a rod holder most of the time and weight is not a number one factor but its nice. More importantly you can have the rod “your way”. Want a 9” handle from butt to reel seat - sure. Want it 14” - sure. Want a 5” foregrip or a 9” we can do that. Like a graphite reel seat or an aluminum - your call. Want it basic black or want it tricked out every way from Sunday - it’s just a matter of budget Happy to discuss if you’re interested in a couple or full set….
