Been coming down to SML for the last 30 yrs. I only get down once or twice a year. This year we came a little later than we normally do, but had a good weekend. We got down Friday late afternoon and fished up Bull Run near where Bull Run and Blackwater meet. Caught 2 within a hr. One jigging a fluke and the other casting a fluke thanks to Active Target which my buddy just got and is crazy good! Seems like video game fishing. Didn't mark much bait or fish in the Bull Run so went up Blackwater further on Saturday. Started in Gills Creek. Tons of bait, but very few striper if any and didn't catch any. Mid morning headed up to B33 area and proceeded to catch 11 striper and one white perch by lunch time. Biggest fish 8-9 lbs. No big schools, saw small pods occasionally, and plenty of singles and 2s and 3s, but they were actively biting our flukes. For whatever reason a yellow headed 3/4 oz. jig head with a white fluke was out fishing white headed jig heads that day. Caught 5 casting when we saw them on Active Target and the other 6 jigging. Fish seemed to be chasing pretty good given the 46-ish degree water temps. I was expecting the fish to be a little slower, but when we saw them on Active Target and brought our flukes by them, they came after them aggressively! Came out in the evening 1-2 hrs. Went in to Gills again and nothing again. Caught one just outside Gills jigging a fluke but didn't mark much in the afternoon. Air temps I think were in the upper 50s with a little breeze. Sunny skies. Really good day to be on the water for sure!
