Wt: 83 and slightly clouded, but still clear.
Wx: passing front coming from the SW. sprinkles and clouds, clearing to just clouds by dawn. Heavy overnight rain.
Dawn - 11am
Live bait and jigging
Most fish staying 35-60’ deep
Took my daughter to live bait some summer stripers. Launched at 430, ran all over the BW trying to get good bait (4-6” ales were the target). Plenty of peanut everything and mature threadfins. Finally found a light at 545 holding deep bait. 40’ deep we were getting qty 5-15 per throw of 6-10” bluebacks. A little big but OK, better than peanuts right.
Lines in at 620. Fish on before We were done setting lines. ~24” LMB, probably biggest I’ve seen at SML length wise. Worked that patch of deep trees for 30-40 mins, seeing small groups of striper come through. Had two rods get buried and neither got stuck well enough to net.
A lack of fish had us moving out to some big humps and creek bends. Found fish again, small groups. My daughter put a 30” in the boat soon after we set up. Had two more lines get buried at the same time, and broke one and lost the other. Had a few pull the fluke off my jig.
The trollers were doing pretty good around us.
The few fish in that creek absolutely vanished around 9:30-10 am. Searched for over an hour, never found anymore.
Watched stripers come inspect our baits and jigs all morning. Every school that came under us swiped at our live baits, just very few interested in eating huge bluebacks. Probably should have kept some of those 4-5” threadfins.
Of note, when I first found the fish in this creek, the creek was LOADED with clouds of bait 10-30’ deep. And the fish were there in numbers. I believe they’ve either run the bait out, or eaten it. Because the last couple trips in there, I’ve marked very little bait. Almost none yesterday. Certainly the majority have moved into another area with ample food.
