Friday afternoon was a pretty decent bite before that front pushed in. Caught 8 between 30-33”. All came on 11-12” shad fished 8ft behind a planer board. Water temps ranged from 54 to 58deg.
Saturday, we fished in the Mafia Spring fling event. Tougher bite, but we managed 4 fish between 32.5-36”. Similar technique to Friday - freelined boards with even bigger shad. Had one smoke a 16” shad (in length - it was 6” tall) and the brand new leader I tied broke on the hookset (whoops!). Ended up in 2nd place for the day - felt fortunate with that result. Great to catch up with an old buddy Captain Bert too who snuck into third place in his first mafia event. Water temps ranged from 52-57deg.
Other observations: - I know Dan said our shad population is down (and I understand why he thinks that based on last fall), but the large shad population is maybe as strong as I’ve seen it in the last 15yrs. It is everywhere as are the stripers right behind it. - Also, continued success testing out the new Back Creek striper rods. They have exactly what I was looking for in a planer board rod for bigger fish; really soft upper end with a backbone that does not give an inch. You also won’t find a spiral wrap on any of the striper rods coming in from China. Message Mwardncsu for details.
