Wx: 50s, sunny, light wind from the south Water: 56-58, muddy to stained Launched around 1:30pm. Spent an hour finding bait, 8-12” gizzards. It wasn’t hard, just took some time to chase them down in shallow, muddy water. We went crappie fishing for a bit. Got about 20 total, kept 12 for dinner that were 10-13”. 10-16’ deep on brush, muddy water. Half on shiners and half on jigs. Got started pulling bait around 4pm, in lightly stained water inside a small calm creek. Freelined gizzards on the banks. Short leashes, 5-6’ max. Didn’t take 5 minutes before our biggest baits got smoked. Hook turned on the first and we just missed the second. And that was about the pace of fishing for the next 90 minutes. The fish were really putting on a show.. Every point we passed had a few fish on it. We lost half a dozen, missed just as many or more. Poor hooksets, turned hooks, fish swimming at the boat, etc. Thankfully my daughter was able to get one to hold on long enough to get it over the gunnel. It was her first striper, which is why we were out there today. She wanted to catch one and she did it. With the missions accomplished we headed in for dinner. Great day.

Awesome. Just awesome. Keep that girl on the water, dad. I have many fond memories w/ my youngest daughter. She loved to fish. Then she discovered boys . . .

I’m trying! It can be tough at times especially since she’s finally noticed that none of her friends hunt or fish.
We went and hit a local trout pond this morning for the “cheap thrill” and reinforcement. It worked.
Until next weekend. Or Wednesday…

Sounds like a great trip even if you missed a lot of the stripers. Were you using circle hooks or J hooks?

J hooks that weren’t quite big enough. Plus a couple rods with no backbone that need to find the dumpster.
