Weather: Nasty! Temps in the low 40’s, winds 10-20 sustained with gusts to 40, cloudy then sunny then cloudy then sunny with a few spurts of rain and oh yeah. Some snow/sleet/rain and then a snow-burst for about 5 min
Water: 51-54, stained to muddy in most of the creeks, nice color in coves
Techniques: freelined 8” - 12” gizzards on planers & floats targeting secondary points and mid/backs of creeks early - then pulling wherever we could get some relief from the wind
Time fished: 6:45am till 3:45p
Snacks: BoJangles sausage & egg biscuits, summer sausage, peanut butter crackers
2nd Annual Fishing for the Fallen tourney.
My boat had not hit the water since late Sept or Oct I think… to my surprise it cranked up and ran like a scaled ape. Tyler and I went out to catch bait on Fri afternoon and were able to load the tank with some nice fresh 8-12” gizzards in fairly short order - and then we went to do some (unsuccessful) scouting in preparation for the next day
I ran over to Crazy Horse about 5:30 to pick up our guests - a Army veteran and an active duty Marine while Tyler got the boat ready to head out.
We hit the water and ran to our first spot with about 10 min to wait for lines in. Got to work at 6:45 as the wind started to build. We pulled that creek a while finding a spot where some fish were holding and were able to hook up with one to get us on the board.
When we decided to make a move the board would not get above 3300 rpm… felt like a fuel issue and given how long it had set it was not surprising - but was going to suck for the day…. Limited to plowing about 8 mph so we had to regroup a bit on our plan…
We fished a number of creeks and coves in the nearby area, and picked up another fish that was a hair larger at 30.75”
We kept trying to hide from the hurricane winds as best possible - though our third fish came as we pulled out of a creek back into the main channel off a point with white caps crashing everywhere - this one again just a bit larger at 31.25”
We marked fish fairly consistently but the bite was not strong.
We hit a nearby cove where we had some blowup action as the snow started but didn’t hook up - prototype Back Creek Custom Live Bait planer rods on action…. Check out the soft tip for planers and the spiral/acid wrap of the guides which takes all the torque/twist out of the rod when fishing a fish.
made a few more moves and then about 3:45 packed it in…. When the Yamaha decided it was ok now to actually run normal 🤦♂️
Headed back over to Crazy Horse for the check-in and hang out with everyone - we we’re fortunate to squeak out 1st Place for the day
I was also honored to build a rod that was raffled off to raise funds for the group
I want to say a big thanks to Ducky, Hunter and all involved with The Fallen Outdoors - Team Virginia for the work you guys do getting our veterans into the outdoors - to all the other captains/crews for donating your time & resources for the event and most importantly to our veterans and active duty soldiers - for the sacrifices you’ve made for all of us.
