SML Plug Troll last trip and report 10-22 Friday
Weather- Air high 60’s ? – Overcast skies, wind not a factor. Put rain coat on three times
Sunset & Peak time set 6:23 pm minor 2:52pm-4:52 pm see picture
Flow ROA USGS "Parkway" 3.0 decreasing
Water temp surface 65 ?
Clarity – Light Brown to Greenish water four feet maybe less visibility wise
Activity - Sonar activity bait & larger marks hit and miss, little bait surfaces small & large seen, Schools/groups of peanuts, looked like rain at times, patch of Dead 3 inchers floating, Active surface feeding-blow-ups & chasing sporadic,
Pressure -Parking lot a few trailers, Five or six pulling boards etc. working area, seen maybe one or two caught overall fish were tight lipped
Caught – 4:45 pm one 28.75 Striper trolling against flow see picture, Lure Live Target . in 8 1/4 long 3 oz on steel leader & braided 30 colored line. 6:04 pm one line stuck on bottom reeling all back caught 26.5 striper on storm flatstick no leader 80lb braid to swivel.
Trolled 2-4 rods 25hp 4-stroke jet going 1.8 -3.2 mph average 2.5 mph used the 2-stroke 15hp but all were caught with the jet trolling didn’t bother with the 24v motor guide
Water depth 11-30 targeted 12-20 with plugs various line distance behind boat average 70. Max was 110 feet behind used slip bobber knots for 50 and 100 distance indicators. Knots were not good for clip on line counters.
No bait, No boards
Rod Shimano SJC-M70MH Penn 320 GT Righty for son so reel had FireLine tracer 30lb braid and Berkley steel leader 24’’ 45lb. Other fish I used 80lb braid and an abu C4 lefty with no leader. Trolled with rod tips in the water so that the floating leaves etc. don't run down the line and foul the lure. Using two scotty and four Fish-on adjustable rod height holders. It’s nice to go from rod tip in the water to 7 feet in the air to adjust depth-curves and avoid snags. Tried a variety of plugs was excited to try a Storm Giant Thunderstick 20 no luck. I like rattles and the two plugs that worked had loud ones. Also tried casting soft plastics and plugs to blow-up areas surprisingly no takers. I released both fish still trying to find a SML Muskie been three years since the last one that report is posted under SML Muskie. Good luck to all I'm leaving it to the pro's next weekend.
