Got lucky and found Striper busting shad at sunrise and sunset today. Caught two just under 30” and a few smaller ones. Had two big ones shake and bend out the hooks on the jerkbait. Caught One on a megabass 110 +2 jerkbait. And the other one on a 6” Storm shad swimbait. Marked a big school at the mouth and choke point of a mainlake cove. They were 20-30 feet deep when they weren’t busting the shad topwater. I just followed the action as they sporadically went nuts. It was awesome.

Great report sure is later than I have seen it for a while but last year I didn’t fish much in October!

Woke up this morning hoping to find the same top water action but did not. Marked fish in the same areas but noticed a lack of schools of bait. They were holding tight to the bottom, ~30-40 feet.
Could be yesterday’s storm or today’s wind that killed the topwater bite but not sure.

Did you note WTs?

Airborne,
I'm embarrassed that I did not note WTs. That said I've noticed the WTs on the blackwater are much lower than what is being reported from the Roanoke arm. Last week I was seeing WTs of 63 degrees.
Biggest difference I can see is pre versus post front and calm versus very windy.
They might still be biting well but I really got spoiled by the top water action making the fishing so darn efficient...

Wind will move bait…. Wind moves the water which moves the chlorophyll and nutrients suspended in the water which in turn moves the filter-feeding bait…
When having a hard time finding bait - look in the direction the wind HAS been blowing over the last day or so….
