Water: 57-61, visibility from 2-6’
Weather: temps in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s - sunny to start, then cloudy with the day ending in a downpour
Techniques: free-lined gizzards (8-11”) 8’-15’ behind planer boards and a float our back
We had the chance to participate in a great event this weekend to support The Fallen Outdoors and our veterans. Fishing For The Fallen tournament in Smith Mountain Lake had almost 25 teams, including many that participate in the Striper Mafia series, out with close to or over 40 veterans on the water for a day of striper fishing.
Tyler and I both came up on Friday to catch bait - he headed down from the bridge and I headed up.... we didn't have problems finding bait in most creeks in shallow water - but it took work to find larger bait - and even then we didn't get what we really wanted (those big 12-14" gurls).... but we had plenty of 8-9s, a number of 9-10" and some 11"s to drag around in the morning.
4am wake-up call to be at Crazy Horse Marina by water by 5:30 to meet everyone and pick up our Veteran - and head to the fishing grounds for a 6:45 lines in.
We fished a number of creeks focusing on the banks and water under 20’ or so. We caught at least one fish in each creek we fished I think... brought 7 striper with only one being under the slot to the boat and 5 or 6 nice bass as well - including a 20” smallmouth and 21” largemouth.
The weather was great till storms ran most of us off the water in the last two hours, but thankfully they moved on out of the way in time for the post tournament awards and celebration.
I was honored to also provide a custom rod designed for the event which raised funds through a veteran only raffle - congrats to the gentleman who won it and hope he catches a lot of fish on it.
We were fortunate enough to hook into a few nice fish during the day which secured 1st place as well as Big Fish and Veteran Big Fish for our Vietnam Veteran which we were privileged to have aboard.
Great job by Ducky Lique & Hunter Dalton in coordinating and putting on the event and thanks to Crazy Horse Marina for hosting it - look forward to doing it again!
