After the year we've had it's hard to believe there's anything worth celebrating. It's pretty easy to get caught up in the onslaught of bad news, bad attitudes, and bad behaviors. In a time when we, as a nation, should be pulling together we managed to find new ways to pull each other apart. My sincere wish for all is that we find the way back to how we used to be. While the data overwhelmingly suggests that's not likely I remain the eternal optimist. Once we lose sight of and hope for doing the right thing we're doomed. I don't think we're quite at the edge of the abyss but there are days when I can see the edges. Collectively, we need to take a deep breath, hold it, then slowly let it out. In thru the nose and out thru the mouth. Fill those lungs up from bottom to top. Get all that oxygen back into the brain where it can help us think, see, and act more clearly.
In ol' Airborne's house, we celebrate the greatest story of patience, tolerance, and acceptance. We read and re-read the many versions and translations just to get a feel for how other people may be celebrating the same thing. In all of our reading we've learned thru the years that the central theme stands out, no matter who tells the story or how it was written: ". . . and the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory." Daughter #2 made it in safely last week (after a COVID test, btw). #1 and her husband elected (wisely) to stay put. While we'll miss their presence our house is filled with the echoes of their laughter and chatter. The traditions we practice as part of this season are in full force. I once thought of the iPhone as the scourge of society. I now believe the face-time function is a saving grace. See??? Even ol' Airborne learnt him something.
To all, I pray the warmth of the season fill your houses and those of your friends and loved ones. I wish you good health and filled live wells. My hope is for 2021 to be a year of renewal - for each of us individually, for our nation, and for our world. When you find yourself running short of patience or tolerance check out the story of 'the word becoming flesh'. Grace is bigger than all of our ills. All of them.
peace,
B
