Weather - Cloudy skies early giving way to clear skies by early afternoon.
Water Temperature - 66-67 degrees.
Bait - Gizzards, mostly 6-7 inches with a dozen in the 8-9 inch range and a few decent Alewives.
Technique - Freelined Planers
I got to the lake before dark on Friday and went looking for bait. The first creek I hit creek had been absent of bait for the last two weeks. This week was a little different with small bait plentiful. I was able to find some decent gizzards scattered around, picking up one or two every 3-4 throws. I had to run back to the house for dinner and came back after dark. I was expecting the bait to be better after dark but that was not the case. The creek was nearly empty of bait.
We headed out at 7am with about 15 solid baits in the tank. Trying to do a few routine things like clean tank filters and sort some rods, we had action right away, missing two solid runs. One hit an alewife and the second a larger gizzard.
We moved on and quickly found a 34 inch fish that destroyed our largest bait. In the next hour we landed two more fish, a 29.5 and a 33.
We headed a little further up river and was able to add some fresh bit smaller baits. We had several chases and boils but nothing that wanted to commit. The water clarity changed considerably above Beaverdam.
We fished until 4 pm but had very little activity after noon. We ended the day with three fish, missed several more and felt like we could have caught six or seven.
The second picture came from Friday night casting off the dock following our bait run. That fish was 34.5.
