Got out for three hours this AM. Had planned on staying ~all day but the recreational fun-n-games started early today. I was on a pretty good run right up until the wake boat pulling the two tubers came within 50 feet. Sometimes it just doesn't matter how careful we as fishermen are. We have no (zero, none, nada) control over those other people. To date, trusting them to do the right thing hasn't exactly paid off in full.
I resumed my midlake work, revisiting a series of points, humps, and manmade cover to see what they looked like in the summer. No takers on top or on moving baits. They wanted it slow and on the deck today. Found fish on main lake and secondary points holding close to docks, on brush, and on first breaks. Was surprised to see how shallow they were - all of my bites came from 4-8'. I spent a bit of time fishing deeper (15-25') without so much as a sniff. The fish, for the most part, were suspended off of the bottom on breaks or on top of rock/brush piles. The dock fish were holding on the front posts or corners.
Observations: 1) Water temps were steady everywhere I went - 84.6 at launch (state park), 85.2 ~3 miles downlake from the park, 85 ~3 miles uplake from the park. Water has a slight stain to it - maybe 3-4' of viz. It gets clearer the further downlake you go. 2) Marked a lot of baitfish shallow today. Lots of smaller scattered pods suspended over the ends of points and along channel ledges. I did not see any surface feeding. 3) Seams (places where structure or cover changed) were key today. 4) Jig produced numbers but they were all small. C-rig produced better fish. No surprise on plastics or jigs - natural colors.
Apologize for the lack of content but that's about all I could glean from my limited time on the water today. I'm steadily working my way backwards thru the week. Next trip will be on a WED, then a TUES, then a MON. Hoping to find a slight pause in the volume of rec boat traffic but fully realize this is probably just wishful thinking on my part. I was the one screaming for warmer temps earlier this year so I'll take any/all backlash for my next statement: c'mon winter.
peace,
B
