Hello everyone! I picked up a nice pontoon for the family this year. Not trying to invest in a bait tank or trolling motor right now. Looking for tips and suggestions on some artificial lures that I could pull while we were out and about. A few people have suggested Mann’s Stretch, F18, Thunderstick’s, and Redfins. Has anyone pulled the Rapala X-Rap Magnums? I already have a few Penn Battle 2 4000’s spooled with 20lb braid. Would this setup work or do I need something different? Thanks in advance for the help!

Have used redfins, rapala x raps, and stretch 20s and trolls 2. Stretch 20s will usually go down to 16 to 18 ft, depending on the particular bait. X raps are more consistent. The deep redfins wont go quite as deep. That's with 100 ft of 15 lbs mono at 2.5 mph.I like mono better because of the line stretch on hookup. It's also much easier to break off when you get a bait that wont come off a treetop. Outside the 20 contour there are treetops so buy a good plenty of baits and a good plugknocker.

Umbrella rigs always worked for me. Sometimes expensive to lose. My preference would be to use umbrellas instead of plugs in the absence of leadcore setups.
Also did a lot of catching on flutter spoons on leadcore and 3 ways with sassy shads and spoons, also on lead.
I tended to troll a lot faster than most prefer. 4mph was a good starting point speed for me. Spoons won’t run at that speed without tuning though.
We used to catch a lot of fish trolling may - October. I don’t do it much anymore.

Couldn’t I use a 3 feet of mono leader to the lure and just use my braid?

Yes you could. I would use fluorocarbon and a longer leader than 3 ft. Maybe 8 to 10 ft. If you stay with the braid I would use a 7 or 7 1/2 ft rod with plenty of flex. I found an uglystick livebait rod in ML works ok. The rapala baits come with pretty good hooks but some of the others, not so much. Prob better to change hooks. You can see some good knots online to attach fluoro to braid or you use a tiny swivel. Good Luck and I hope some of this helps.

Caught on -9 inch plug with 2 inch rubber trailer grub see picture has a loud clank -rattle system
Used- 80lb braid with 100 pound mono flouro leader 10inch ? used main jet motor 60/40 going 2.5/3.0 mph holding rod cast length behind boat 80/100 feet line out?
Could see some fish symbols at 30 feet in 35 feet of water, tried casting in morning at this spot nothing, trolled by on way home and hooked up 34 inch striper swam away strong. Got the stink off the new net. And fixed the fuel line real reason for taking the jet to SML. Continued to fish location and deep sonar marks nothing. Bait quarter size schools and flipping seen. Feel lucky to have caught one fish with the system I was using at the time.
