A rare treat today - got to fish w/ one of our board members, the Choo-dood. Rob and I linked up at the state park for a morning outing. We'd been talking about doing this for a while and finally found a day when things lined up.
Rob indulged me as I continued my study of the mid lake region. We revisited some water I'd fished a few weeks back, this time keying on some points and ledges I couldn't get to on the last trip. No takers on top but we did have a couple of bites on a DT-6 that managed to shake off before we could get them to the boat, boated a shorty not long after. We worked moving baits as our primary presentation until I started marking fish holding tight to the deck. Switched to the c-rig and managed to land a solid keeper off of a secondary point. We worked c-rigs on points, docks, and ledges drawing lots of bites but our execution was off. Missed quite a few obvious bites that should've been boated. A couple of the baits came back missing tails and flappers. Looks like the fish may have been a bit tentative in eating it.
Later in the AM Rob switched to a weightless plastic and started working some shallow wood and overhanging brush. He got bit almost right away. I picked up my fluke and started doing the same thing. Had 2 really good bites that I failed to hook up on. Meanwhile Rob lands our best fish of the day, a solid 2.5 lb'er that inhaled his bait. We called it a day around noon.
Observations: 1) WT at launch was 60.3. The recent cold weather really put the zap on the water. Saw 62.4 about 2 miles up from the state park. 2) Water is almost normal midlake. A bit of a stain, prob from pollen. 3) The water was up at launch. I'd say at least a foot. 4) Scattered bait activity, all of it in main creek channels and all of it deep. We did see some shallower bait activity later in the AM. That's about when we had the majority of our bites. 5) 6-10' was the magic range today but take that w/ a grain of salt. We missed a lot of fish. Bites came as baits deflected off of or came thru brush, wood, or rock. The short guy we caught came off of a dock. 6) We had lots of panfish bites today. I mean lots. Little bastages were active. Prob a sign that they're getting ready to do their dirty deed.
So, this was a fishing kinda day. Not a lot of catching. Lake was fairly quiet. A few fishermen, a few rec boats, and a few jet skis. Believe fishing during the week is the ticket.
SML was a lil stingy today but that didn't spoil things. Had a great visit w/ Rob. Always cool when you can put a face and name to an on-line handle. He's promised me a reciprocal striper trip when that bite gets right. Can't wait. Thanks for coming out, Rob. Enjoyed it.
peace,
B
