Wanna say up front that I miss people the most. I miss my church family and prayer group. Yeah, we're connecting via phone and web-based tools but the intimacy of human interaction can't be replicated by digits and electrons. There are things about work I don't particularly care for but I do have some cool teammates. I miss going to the gym. Have been able to work out at home fairly effectively but, again, the people part of the gym experience is a huge void right now.
The work from home routine has actually been a boon for me. I don't get the daily distractions and interruptions so common in the office. I'm actually getting more work done when it comes to office stuff. When I am locked into a long phone conference I have the ability to do stuff around the house as I listen in. Have managed to knock out quite a bit off the honey-do list these past 3 weeks. Gonna have a lot of free weekends when this madness is over.
I'm grateful the leadership of our state have opted to keep state parks and facilities open. I've had occasion to take advantage of proximity to Claytor and SML during this ordeal. It's comforting to know someone in the administration recognizes the social distancing capability of a bass boat or a hiking trail. Just sayin' . . .
Most importantly, I've had occasion to spend time with family, including our faithful dog (the most important family member, BTW). I'm pleasantly surprised by the absence of frustration and anxiety with being shut in. Our dog will never be the same after this - she expects me to be there all day long for her personal service and amusement. I'm good with that. Nothing wrong with spending time with something or someone focused on love.
On the way back from a recent trip to SML I passed a church whose marquis read, "Take time to reach out." This stayed with me the entire drive home. It haunted me as I worked on dinner and as I was sitting by the fire pit afterwards. After a while I reached for my phone and started working my way down my contacts list. It took a few days but I ultimately got to everyone I hadn't spoken to recently. Connected w/ some, left VM messages for others. They were simple calls - "you OK?" "need anything?" Reconnecting w/ old friends did a lot for my morale. It filled the void created by the social distancing and stay at home orders. I encourage y'all to reflect on "take time to reach out." It'll make a difference in your approach to and appreciation for the circumstances in which we now live.
peace,
B
