Been wanting to fish in a striper mafia tournament for a long time. My brother had his bass tracker running decent so I told him let’s take the trip! Myself, my brother, and my dad took the 7 hour trip from northern WV to SML for the event and it didn’t disappoint. We arrived Late afternoon Thursday and had some work to do to get the boat ready. Got the boat set up and found some Shad to go out first thing Friday. Caught 1 4 pounder and needed to make a shad run. Got some more Shad and got another 4 pounder. Went out Friday evening and caught a good haul of Shad for the tourney the next day. First thing Saturday, didn’t even have all of our lines out yet and had our first fish ( 23 3/4”)... fished for a couple more hours and no more action so decided to head further up the lake. Trolled around for about two hours and was about ready to move and then it happened... A reel started screaming, and after a hell of a fight we boated a beautiful striper well within the slot! So we get it pinned down on the deck. First thing that I wanted to do is get ahold of him with my grippers so I can get the hook out. I’m practically laying on the fish and he takes a giant flop and slips out from under me and right off the boat 🤯... my pb is 36” and this fish was right in that class... I screamed some obscenities, pounded on the boat, and we were all pretty much silent with disbelief on what had just transpired. At that point we were able to go replenish our Shad and fish hard for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, we didn’t land anymore fish. After a frustrating day we we showed up at the post tourney meeting and our spirits were immediately uplifted! What fun it was to share stories of trials and tribulations with other teams and watch those kids (
most of them put our team to shame) receive their awards. We even won a raffle (that never happens). I can’t say enough about the efforts of Mike Ward and everybody else involved in putting on this event. Can’t wait to do another one! By the way we were staying at Striper’s landing and fishing Gil’s creek and black water. Shad were pretty easy to find and had plenty of Striper action!
