My jail term with Verizon is up and I'd like to go with a different company, T-mobile or sprint or maybe Ntelos.
But I can't complain about the coverage around the lake with Vzon so I wonder if anyone who travels the lake a lot, both by boat and/or vehicle can recommend or not recommend their carrier.
Thanks

Ntelos you will have issues outside this region as they are a regional carrier. So if you don't travel then you should be OK for the most part. My in-laws have them and in some spots they have poor coverage around the lake but other places in more populated areas their coverage is good and prices are cheap.
I know some people who have AT&T and they have complained of some dead spots on portions of the lake.
Sprint - Ive heard the same as AT&T. Sprint was also recently bought out by a Asian company and most of their techs are sub contracted out and have way to many cell sites per tech to reliably handle if problems arise.
US Cellular - Havent heard much on their coverage lately around the lake. I know the guy that runs their Switch here in Roanoke and he isn't the brightest tool in the shed. Cant speak for anything other than that outside the area
T-mobile - I used to have them years ago and hated them so I switched. Had coverage problems in a lot of places I thought I should have coverage.
Verizon - Coverage around the lake, none is better. Reason being is the CEO has his vacation home one the lake so you can make sure he is not going to have coverage problems in and around the lake. One other thing is during any of the recent storms Verizon had the most coverage when everyone else's sites were down. Each cell site has its own standby generator to keep it on the air while other company's don't. Others only put generators in their top sites and even some don't put generators at any sites.
I know Verizon is far from the cheapest, but its one of those things you get what you pay for.

I have US Cellular and haven't noticed any problems with the exception of one area. When I head back into Beaverdam when I get to the hard left turn by those two islands I lose coverage. I don't fish much up the river so I can't say much about coverage there.

Hate to say it because I want to drop Verizon too but for traveling all over VA, NC and SC none of the others have the coverage Verizon does. My buddies all end up using my phone when we hunt because theirs don't work and in fact I am aware of only 3 dead spots in VA and they are 1-2 miles long where I travel . If anyone can talk me out of it please do because I would leave in a heartbeat if I thought I could.

I have Verizon and only lose signal occasionally around the Beaverdam area on the Roanoke. On the Blackwater, it's crap all over from Gills up.

AT&T is good from Indian and down to the dam on the Roanoke side - not sure about Blackwater - it is spotty above Indian - dead in the back of Beaver Dam & Lynville, OK at Moormans & Hardy, but again, hit and miss along the way in betweem

Which so happens to be on gills creek. The again he might have actually said something Its crazy everytime he comes to town. All I know is that I am glad I dont have my co-workers job. He has sat a many day and nights at the end of his drive way.
