2/1- Mostly cloudy with a few sprinkles
Low 31 - High 50-ish
WT 41.5 way upriver to 47.5 in mid main channel
Most fish caught on bank side on free line planers with bigger baits - 8" and larger baits were the ticket baits
I was able to work from the lake on Friday 1/31 and headed out about 4PM to find bait. found bait pretty easily in the same spot they have been holding for the past 2 months and had a loaded tank within 45 minutes. I decided to do a quick pull in the same area and was rewarded with 4 good bites in a 20 minute span. these 4 bites turned into a 31" fish in the boat and a 24" fish in the boat with another larger fish that I fought for a minute or so coming un-buttoned and the 4th bite never getting hooked up.
Saturday morning started in that same area and quickly caught a 35", a 32" within the first few minutes and added a 26" an hour or so later as we pulled boards out of the creek. Had some birds circling in the area but did not see any fish busting the surface. We went to change spots and ooops - had a dead cranking battery - took us a while to get that sorted out and a run to Rocky Mount and a few minutes to install the new battery we headed back out on the water about 1PM. We made a run up-river to see what was going on and water was really stained and cold. We tried there for about 45 minutes and then went in search of better water.
Tried another mid-BW creek and pulled baits from the mouth towards the back and started to see a bit of action towards the back with a missed strike and then I hooked up to what must have been a massive fish. He hit a free-line under a float out the back and then pulled drag for a consistent 30 seconds out into deeper water into the main channel - all I could do was hang on and I never even cranked the reel and then he took my line into a tree or stump or comething and hung it up and eventually broke off. We missed a couple more fish and boated one more 32" fish and a 26" fish.
Sunday we started where we spent the previous evening - we got there early and were putting boards out in the dark when we heard a huge splash followed by a rod bending over and a good fight was on. a 35" PIG came into the boat and was maybe the heaviest fish I've caught at SML. All the fish caught in this area on Sunday were caught way up the creek in shallow water - even the nice greenfish. We stayed in that same area all morning and caught another 34.5", a 32" and a 28" and quit fishing around 11 to head home and start Super Bowl festivities.
