I hit the water this afternoon with the father in law at 3:30. That’s right, two hours to fish. Little did I know it would be an unforgettable 2 hours. Knew it was gonna be a run and gun deal so I had three spots in mind. The first had fish, but they were scattered and treeey. Rolled into the second spot with confidence so I didn’t look much, just dropped the trolling motor and started jigging. Fish showed up in short order and a 20 incher was quickly caught. Then good marks showed up on the bottom. I made a couple of quick little pops and I got bit. I immediately started thumbing a screaming reel as I yelled to the father in-law to start looking to see if mermaids were in season. I knew I was hooked to the biggest striper I had ever caught. Upon landing it was a mad rush to get her measured and back in. We pulled the only measure I had out of my bogas which stretched 39 inches and we had fish left over. In the rush I didn’t get a picture with the measure and I didn’t weigh her as I didn’t want to hang such a big fish unsupported. The release was quick and lively. We left that spot to go to the place I really wanted to be at dark. Fish we present and biting for the 5th consecutively evening trip to this location. Soon a group of birds started tightening about 100 yards from us even though there was no surface activity. I headed over there and there were stripers by the 100’s. We caught them till dark and headed home. Tallied 9 on the short afternoon trip. I’ve heard folks say that the birds can see stripers well below the surface. I’m definitely a believer now.
