Just wondering what you guys think of the new gun laws that are supposedly going to be enacted by the new legislature come the first of the year. It appears that now that Virginia’s state government is under complete Democrat control for the first time in a generation, they’re going to take the heavy stick they were just given and begin beating gun owners over the head with it. One bill is an “assault-style weapons ban” bill. This bill would go farther than just banning modern sporting rifles. It would prohibit any gun capable of holding more than ten rounds. Democrats claim this ban would cut down on gun deaths. Another bill would require background checks on all firearms sales and transactions, mandating that any person selling, renting, trading or transferring a firearm must first get the results of a background check before the transaction can be completed, i.e., personal sales must comply with this law.
Also, there is legislation pending making sAny semi-automatic pistol with a fixed magazine capacity in excess of 10 rounds will also be illegal to own if this bill passes. If the pistol has the ability to accept a detachable magazine other restrictions apply, which include banning threaded barrels and prohibiting pistols weighing 50 ounces or more.
Shotguns with the ability to accept detachable magazines or having a fixed capacity of over seven rounds would also become illegal to own.
Senate Bill 64 states that a person is guilty of a felonious "paramilitary" activity if that person teaches or demonstrates the use or application of a firearm and has reason to know that such training will result in the furtherance of a civil disorder. I guess CCW trainers are now in jeopardy as well as any trainer in firearms.
I'd like to know your thoughts on this.

First and foremost, I'm relieved that my shotgun holds only 5 rounds. Secondly, I feel bad for the good folks that these laws will impact.
Do I think these laws will help anything? Nope!
My feeling is that this is just one example of extreme measures used to counteract extreme circumstances that result from extreme division. School shootings are not because of guns, they are caused by the constant onslaught of biased opinions that result from an ever growing division in our country. We can't kill the amount of information but we sure could work to tone it down... each and every one of us. Unity is the only feasible answer I can fathom. Like impeachment, these laws will not bring about unity and will most likely make the problem they are intended to solve, worse!
This is how someone in the middle feels. And if my shotgun held 7 rounds, I would simply go buy one that holds 5 and keep my anger to myself.

When the guns are gone people will simply find other weapons with which to threaten, hurt, or kill one another.
I have zero issue w/ backgrounds checks. My question is, how will the state of VA enable and enforce this? If the state is mandating a new condition it has to provide the resources to all. IMHO this is unobtainium. No way they can afford it, esp w/ all the free chicken programs they want to establish.
I have zero issues w/ limitations on magazine capacities. One can enjoy his/her AR or AK for sport or hunting w/ a 5-round mag. The home defense issue is where this sticks a bit for me. I think limiting pistols is an overreach.
I'm still waiting to hear/read how the state of VA is going to reimburse me for surrendering my now-illegal weapons that were purchased legally and with the state's endorsement. Kinda surprised this hasn't gotten more air time.
In the long run, it's hard swings to the extremes like this that cause people in the middle to rise up. NOV 2016 should serve as a living reminder as to the true nature of American thinking. Most of us are in the moderate band - slightly left and right of center. If you start pushing the entire apparatus to an extreme the moderates will shift to the opposite pole. In science they call this equilibrium. (Politicians would be well-served by revisiting or studying what this term means.) To that end, as quickly as the current administration in VA enacts such legislation a new platform will emerge and unseat them. All of this will go away quickly, quietly.

Interesting! Equilibrium... I never looked at it like that. Your analogy identifies what I feel is happening to me right now. The moderate voice tends to stay out of it and I suppose this makes us susceptible to being pulled to one extreme. I have in fact been pulled left and I am doing my best to get myself back to the center. But it hasn't been easy. Taking the average of everyone's extreme view with an ever growing mass of information has overloaded my mathematical skills. The truth is very fuzzy if there even is such a thing.

Not surprisingly I find myself in sync with Yam’s comments regarding a drift left when I’ve been centered most of my life.....specific to gun control I have zero objection to stringent background checks but also know that “guns” are not the problem. There is a crisis of ostracized youth in our country that is so hard to understand.....and the reaction of that troubled group is beyond my comprehension. The idea that a young man could feel so lonely, so objectified, so angry and misunderstood that he would decide the best solution is to kill others and kill himself is impossible to grasp. I agree...we could outlaw all the guns we want...and that would leave a plethora of alternate weapons to accomplish the same outcome. For as many generations as there are humans, the adults have looked at youth with confusion and misunderstanding....but this is different....they’re killing each other. Political posturing and policy will change nothing....we have a social crisis on our hands and only society can possibly fix it....as men and women of goodwill we have no choice but to try in any way we can to help these haunted kids....if my life legacy is that I’ve impacted the well being of youngsters in some small way I will die proud. Get involved....coach a team....talk to kids....TAKE THEM FISHING!!....or just smile at them and say “how’re you doing?....something...anything ....to prevent the slaughter. Sorry about my rant but I feel this is the single most critical issue facing us today...not the stock market, or the trade war, or even the climate....it’s the condition of those fringe kids. We gotta try to save them.
