loaded up my new striper soup bait tank, with a tank full of alewives last night! Have nothing bad to say about it yet, held about 20-25 alewives no problem. Dowlines today is what did it, this was my first time using downlines as I started fishing for striper “full time” last fall, so this has been my first summer fishing. Hit up the first spot that I heard was good. And man I really like downline fishing, being able to see my downlines on the screen and seeing fish come up to look at them is so cool. Didn’t mark any fish but kept fishing. As I was watching my downlines on the screen I saw one of the lines on the screen disappear for a second and then a bunch of weird movements from it. Looked up and a fish was on my front line. 28” fish. Put on ice and kept fishing, moved to an area nearby and did the same thing, rod doubled over again. 26” channel catfish, which probably means my downlines were to close to the bottom. Also, another thing I noticed, my bait tank water was way too cold! Alewives would hit the surface water and just be stunned and would look dead. But I figured they were doing a lot better down in that cooler water, but they definitely died faster because of that I think. Gonna get a tank thermometer and make sure to keep the water 65-70. Tight lines everybody, fall is right around the corner!

Don’t assume that catfish was on the bottom. I intentionally catch my share of catfish, and I never fish on the bottom.

+1 on shallower cats - I routinely catch them on bass lures in <10' of water. They can be very aggressive. Nice work!

Great report.. Down-line fishing can be a lot of fun.. Just wait till you have two or three rods bend over all at the same time...
