I cannot say if one is easier than the other but I do recommend is to cast or let the line out a little longer than you would cast. Put blue painters tape one wrap around the spool. This does not allow the back lash to get but so deep and most of the time I was able to untangle it pretty easy when my kids were learning. The painters tape will also easily rip if you get a big fish that is taking line.

I might also suggest that when setting the drag before casting, the most frequent advice is to set loosen it until the bait drop slowly from the tip of the rod. For a beginner, I suggest to tighten the drag until the bait stops and doesn't drop. You won't cast quite as far but the brake/drag on the spool will stop the line as the bait falls down to the water. Until you have the timing of the cast/thumb down, it might help to avoid a bird nest.

A-G Orra. Inexpensive but a high quality reel. Smooth, comes w/ manual brakes to help w/ the learning curve.
