So, I was down at SML this weekend for some relaxation and fishing(which was poor for me, did lose a 4lb bass at the dock when it went aerial on me and tossed the hook, but back to the story). So I was down there enjoying the weekend, it was Sunday night/Monday morning. I woke up about 3-3:30am, as i'm a poor sleeper these days. Decided to step out on the back deck to have a smoke when i spotted a young deer in the yard, it spooked and ran off up into the woods. a couple minutes later i hear the most vicious feline roar and ruckus take place and a limb snapping, i pictured in my head a giant paw with razor sharp claws flying through the air, thats how vicious this thing sounded. Then for the next 5 or so minutes i hear the cries/screams of an old woman mixed with the slight sounds of a young child giggling coming from the woods, but mostly old woman. I heard, for the first time ever, what i believe to be a wild bobcat in the woods. And I think it was pretty amazing to witness/hear that. Im not sure if it attacked the deer, much less killed it or not. But it certainly sounded like it was trying to get something for a meal.
I will never forget how eerie sounding those cries were. If i didnt hear the roar first, i may have thought bigfoot. i was letting out some whoops earlier that night lol, and bigfoots are supposedly masters of imitating other animals. but im 99% sure it was a bobcat...

Should share that over on the "Residents of SML" Facebook group - those folks over there are having a cornoraries over the pollen that was in the water and now more recently all the weevils and ticks that are around.... Lord knows what would happen if they knew there were things like Bobcats lurking about

LOL thats too funny. i couldnt imagine worrying about pollen in the water. and stuff like bugs and ticks you can spray for if they bother you that much.

So, I hafta ask - what was up w/ the old woman and the kid giggling? Curious minds wanna know . . . As I started reading this I expected you to say mountain lion. Right before I retired we had a rash of mountain lion sightings in NOVA, to include in some well established 'hoods.

My mom claims(and i believe her) to have seen a mountain lion on the farm we used to rent a house on, in Loudoun County, NOVA.
as for the old woman and kid sounds coming from the bob cat, they were quite eerie sounding, almost ghostly

what you are describing sounds like a screech owl to me, they make some crazy sounds, they sounds just like a baby screaming and do sorta make a laughing like sound at times, they will make the hair stand up on the back of ya neck

ExActly what a bobcat sounds like. We have heard many on our farm. Hair raised up on my neck the first time I heard it many many years ago.

im pretty sure it was a feline by the initial roar itself, like a house cat but amplified. and then i googled the sounds of a bobcat and it was definitely what i heard. Pretty sure it wasnt an owl. Though my uncle has seen an owl at SML in broad daylight swoop down and grab some sort of normal bird right out of the air in front of him and fly off with it. said it was one of the coolest things he ever saw...
