Is the Brookneal hatchery still in operation ? There have been a few posts on here that suggest it is not yet when I check the Virginia Game Department site there is no mention of it being out of operation

No - at least not for normal hatchery operations. Last year it as shut down due to the lack of a hatchery manager when the previous one retired and the state hiring freeze prevented them getting a replacement. An organized community effort raised awareness in Richmond and that position and several others were released - but as of last month DGIF had still not "found the right candidate". Without the manager the hatchery cannot operate - there are some basic repairs required to bring it back on-line, much less operate a hatching.
The Striper Club is working to get in front of the right DGIF folks to try and get the real story and then determine what actions we all may need to take. Assumption is thy will hatch at King and Queens and grow out at the ponds at Brookneal again this year but we don't have confirmation of that yet.
