Me and Wyatt headed out early Friday morning on the search for bait we stopped by a couple lights and had some good success with netting some medium gizzards and some really nice large Alewife’s. We headed up black water to the back of a creek and finished filling the tank was some dollar bills. Shot back down the lake to the lower Roanoke River side and started to pull a spread. The air and water temp were both in the low 70s we were pulling free line planer boards and a couple downrod‘s. Ran into another fellow striper club member we exchanged our morning success up to that point and just upon passing each other I had my outside board take off, set the hook. Just a short fight and pulled the hook. Got reset and soon after my inside board takes off that was supporting a big alewife and we hook up Wyatt on the reel solo rolls in a 25 inch striper. We finish the pull on that bank pack up and head further down like to another Creek. As soon as we get the set out again the inside board takes off that was Sporting another large Alwife and we reel in a 28 inch striper. We hit a couple more points wyatt picks up a nice largemouth it’s about lunchtime so we pack it in to go grab a bite to eat. Saturday with the tourney starting at midnight we got out a little earlier to cast on some lights we picked up a 27 inch striper right off the bat and would be our only striper of the tournament we caught a bass and catfish but could not connect with another striper the day was very slow but it’s always a good time out with good friends. Wyatt ended up 2nd in the for the youth with our lone fish. One thing that was different on Saturday is we were not able to get any of the larger Al’s and I feel that could’ve played a little bit of difference that seemed to be the bait of choice. Thank you to the Smith Mountain striper club and everybody that helped with the tournament and all they do for our fishery.
