Last year 4 of us came down to SML for a fishing trip (2 were my dad and myself which have been visiting SML since 2000, and in the past 5 years have gotten into striper fishing. we usually come down during the summer since our profession keeps us busy during the spring and fall months.) As some of you may know, at that time last year the fish were acting differently than usual. My question is, with the gas prices going up, we'd like to rent a house close to where the stripers "normally" are at that time of year. Last year we stayed in Craddock Creek. Summer time we stay near the Hales Ford Bridge and hit up Indian Cove. We want to have a good time fishing (cause were definitely going to have a GREAT time either way just would like to catch more fish and not spend so much damn money with the gas prices going up like they are. ) So any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

When did you come last year and what do you mean by the fish were acting different?
A good spot in May is Craddock creek or anywhere on the lower lake. Indian creek or locations above the bridge would be hit or miss in May..it could be great and it could be terrible. The lower end is where you want to be for the most part depending on the week. Late May can get tricky when the fish are transitioning back into their summer patterns. They may be tougher to keep up with day to day.

It was May 3-6 last year. . the fish were scattered is what i meant. . .i believe it had to do with that warm spell we got early spring. . .Craddock is where we stayed last year so I reckon thats where we'll try to stay this year. . .thanks

Yep, the lower end is where you want to be. There were huge schools of fish all around you the first part of may last year.

I agree with you Will. I have a group that comes over and rents a house in May as well. Last year due to the water temps getting warm from the warm up in March/April the fish spawned differently then other years. We noticed there was not much topwater breaking at that time like the last 6-7 years as well.We caught fish, but I like that topwater action. Water temps reached 65 in March a few times and it was pretty steady in the low to mid 60s throughout April. In the past those temps occurred in early April into May.

If we get them schooling on top we use topwater baits. I love catching them on topwater, it a real blast. Then when that bite's over I catch bait and we fish that the rest of the day.
