AT 27° - 55° WT 49.5°- 53.5° Sunny skies, winds 0 - 5 mph. Water - clear too stained Heavy frost All conditions equal an ice covered bow after catching bait. A little slicky. Lots of floating debris around, so you guys be careful. Especially if your going to be night fishing. For an option today, if striper fishing became slow I would drag the crappie rod out and give that a try. But the striper action kept me occupied enough to keep grinding. I had the hook pull on a really nice fish today. I got to see its size because of the slick water conditions. I think that seeing that fish run up and grab my bait caused me to set the hook a little prematurely, resulting in a poor hook set. I got too excited, and probably would have been better off not seeing the fish. Did a little operation on one of the fish and hope it will be ok. It swam off strong, but I'll never know. The hook had gotten around one of its gills, but not penetrating it. I was able to cut the line and lift up the gill plate and remove the hook from the back side. I had hooked a striper like that on a spoon about 4 years ago. That's the only time I've ever seen a striper jump out of the water like a bass trying to throw the hook. The largest fish was 18 lbs., these pre- spawn fish are fat!

Nice catching!
One thing you can do for a bleeding gill is to pour some carbonated beverage over it - I've heard Mountain Dew works best, but I believe the carbonation is the key (though the citric acid in Mountain Dew may also play a part) - this will help to stop the bleeding - I've done it on more than one occasion on a deep-hooked fish where the hook has grazed some of the gills - amazing how quickly it stops the bleeding.

Thanks for this useful tip! Having dew on my boat is not a problem.

Very Nice Drag! If I did my math correctly, that spread could have landed you 3rd place in the March Tourney.
